And why was this rule change necessary? What good does it promote?
the EXACT same arguments were made about the grad transfer rule
that kind of worked out for LSU
do you want to "give back" 2019?

They are ruining their product with this decision.

No. It's easily distinguishable. In order to avail themselves of the graduate transfer rule, players have to actually finish their curriculum of study. Which necessarily takes years and is easy to predict based on credit hours. It is not nearly as disruptive as allowing players to transfer without consequence or warning at any point in their careers. Again, there is a reason Saban spoke out against the proposed rule:
"I don't know how you manage a roster when this goes into effect,” Saban said. “I can't manage our roster now. Last year, we had eight seniors on our team. We had seven guys go out for the draft and three graduate transfers or guys that ended up transferring. So instead of having 18 seniors, you've got eight. You really have a three-year program at a place like this. I'm not necessarily saying it's going to hurt our program because we'll do a hell of a job recruiting players leaving other places to come here. But is that good for college football?"

I still think a simple rule change or caveat in the rules could fix most of this garbage.
Transfers count towards the 25 per year rule, with the exception of say 2-3 graduate transfers that will be able to play immediately.
If the rule for grad transfers is say 2, than anymore grad transfers taken in that cylce count towards that 25 scholly cap.
This gives you some flexibility for those students that are grad transfers since they are losing the benefit they had over other transfers in the immediate eligibility.
Reward kids that actually graduate with a degree and not hamstring teams and young talent from potentially getting offers.
