Tom Hodson had a shot when they were 10-1-1. They lost to Alabama and tied Ohio State. No way they tied Ohio State and was bad clock management and play calling. Hodson was injured when they lost to Alabama.

Arsparger was a great recruiter and left the cupboard stocked for Archer. That team was as good as anyone in the country. Totally dominated the Sterling Sharpe lead USCe team in the Gator Bowl. After the great senior class of '87 departed the talent level really began to ebb. Still enough to win the SEC in '88 but by '89 Hodson had very little help left.

Rabb was the best QB on the team - but in fairness there were three guys who were all essentially co-starters at that position for the 58 Tigers.

Not really. Rabb and the White Team played most of the game. Matherne and the Go Team might get one series a quarter (very strict substitution rules then - when the Go Team was taken out, they could not come back in during that same quarter). Likewise, the Bandits might get one defensive series a quarter - although Darryl Jenkins was listed as qb for the Bandits, I'm not sure he ever got an offensive snap during that season.

I know - but there were three "teams" so there were three QBs.

The Bandits were known for their defense, but it was Rabb and Cannon who sealed the Halloween Ole Miss game on D.

A careful look at the teams will show you that Arnsparger was not a great recruiter. The three years that he was here, he feasted off of Stovall's recruits, an honorable man who recruited well, but was not a good Head Coach. Arnsparger took the talent to levels that Stovall could not. After the three years of Arnsparger and the senior class that Stovall recruited, Archer did not have much and went after many players that never made it in college for various reasons.
