My view of tonight's game

Well, the game has come and gone, and the Tigers came out with the win, which is more than most teams can say. Several things that I noted from this game.
Jarret Lee: He played well overall and was pretty poised. We opened up the game a little earlier on and then shut it down for the most part. His passes were crisp, timing was solid and made good decisions other than the fumble and INT.
The INT: It was a bad throw in that it was a little high, but I was really more disappointed with Dickson's half-arse attempt at catching it. That pick likely doesn't happen if he makes a full effort on the play instead of just barely moving his arm up.
RBs:
Scott played extremely well as usual. Solid in blocking, great in his running and ball security. Dude doesn't go down on first contact EVER!
Keiland Williams played extremely well. I was really impressed with his running between the tackles. Not scoring wasn't his fault as people missed blocks. Great reaction and hands on the risky screen pass, and amazing in turning it up field.
Murphy ran well, but gets what I call happy feet for RBs in the open field. He's getting into space and honestly wasn't that impressive, but solid overall.
Quinn Johnson needs to learn to hold on to the fricking ball. He was holding it out like a hot potato with no protection.
WRs and TE: What can I say. All played extremely well with few drops and consistent route running. A few of the passes were screwed up, especially to C. Mitchell as a result of HORRIBLE no calls on PI by MSU.
OL: Solid as usual. They seemed to let MSU get to them in the 2nd and parts of the 4th quarter but overall solid game.
Defense:
DL: Overall these guys played well. It's obvious that we lose a little inside without both RJF and Alexander, but hopefully both are alright for Florida. MSU dominated them at times, which really is disturbing and tackling wasn't that great. In pass rush, they lost their lanes several times and allowed for big QB scrambles that never should've happened.
LB: This was the worst group on our team tonight. I was really disappointed in their tackling, coverage, and overall gameplay. They missed easy tackles, and had a lot of arm tackling. On coverage they blew responsibility after responsibility on the running backs and that killed us, and will be used against us the rest of the year if things aren't tightened up. Cutrera as usual made some good plays, but was out of position numerous times.
DBs: My only complaint here is the safeties insistence to lay the big hit rather than rapping up. Otherwise bad tackling was the only other issue, but coverage was not that bad, despite Bob Davie's stupid rants to the contrary.
Special Teams: Solid, they had some mistakes, including two long kickoff returns, but overall were solid.
Overall, the team played well, and the coaches held back, which I found stupid. This is a conference game and was still at 2 or 3 score game most of the night and well within reach for MSU, yet the coaches just sat on the ball much of the game. Thankfully it didn't bite us in the arse.
This team is improving on offense, but regressing on defense, so I hope they fix things on that side of the ball.
What are everyone else's thoughts?

The team needs to tackle better and we need to blitz more in the future. This will keep the back in and help the DBs.

Its almost as if were trying to hide Blitz schemes before the florida game...lol.

Something is wrong on defense. I don't know what it is or how they fix it, but if Mississippi State is able to identify and repeatedly exploit mismatches, somebody on our staff should be able to respond.

Good analysis.
Except I wouldn't fault Dickson for the INT. Dickson faked a down block and then went into pattern. This route take an instant more to develop. Lee just wasn't patient. Threw too early. Easily corrected, though.
I agree that overall Lee played well.

taf, I wasn't insinuating that Dickson blew it, just that like Lafell in the UF game in 2006, should've made a stronger attempt at the ball. Blame still lay on the QB for throwing a ball too high.

this staff doesn't like to blitz ...so don't make excuses....
and against florida its probalby not a good idea since they run so much gimmicky misdirection shite....you gotta play disciplined and tackle tebow and harvin for 4-5 yd gains only....
jai is a good tackler, so are both our safeties usually...

Dude, they do blitz, but not as much as we'd like. They are running some hybrid of Pellini's defense with Man2Man coverage, but it won't work without blitzing.
The problems in the pass defense can be attributed directly to LBer and McCray coverage, plain and simple. Blitzing may help alleviate this, but so would more aggresive coverage by the LBers.

Mostly agree with your assessment.
On our defense, let's say the loss of those two key people to injuries hurt -- because before the two went out, LSU's defense seemed pretty much like a solid wall. We missed a beat afterward and MSU exploited that.
IMO, our defense did not adjust to adversity as well as I might have hoped. Is that coaching, the players, or just this particular game? I dunno. If it happens again, my first inclination is to say we need to look at the coaching (or co-coaching) team for answers. I am not convinced this co-DC thing is all that great an idea.
Main thing is we gotta keep outscoring our opponents and the defense has time to work out kinks.

1)the team needs to tackle, not just hit
2)Lafell needs to hold on to the ball better.

Our linebackers can't cover ANY backs coming out of back field! Riley gets confused on coverage every play. Please tell me Beckwith will be back soon. These linebackers of ours HAVE to cover running backs better, because it is obvious our most major weakness. Also, the last td pass State had, our secondary looked lost! PLEASE GET WELL BARRY BECKWITH.

Riley shows great promise, but his confusion with coverages is obvious. The back out of the back field was ridiculous.

Riley did make some good open-field tackles today, but many times, they occurred after he made a mistake in coverage. I realize that we don't have the same quality at LB as we did last year, but we need to correct our coverage issues ASAP.
I am sure that will be a huge focus in practice the next two weeks, and I am hoping Riley and Shep show some improvement. If not, shouldn't we use a 4-2-5 package for most of the game?
The biggest disappointment for me was that we made NO adjustments during the game, and Tyson Lee successfully ran the same simple play seven or eight times. That is the one aspect where our Co-DCs have to be blamed.
