Excellent breakdown. Hopefully Hatcher's spot on the bench is a permanent one.

Our D Line got held all night long. There was a blatant hold, usually on multiple players, on every pay by WVU.

Think the coaches knew there wasn't a point to blitzing if the refs weren't calling holding on WVU

This was very strange - how was it that barely 1 out of 10 or even 20 holds were called?

I think you maybe right about the coaches' thoughts about not blitzing (due to holding not being called).

just glad they got that tackling out of their system (hopefully) before the uf game. going to have to tackle rainey/demps in space. gotta rediscover that form from the first three games were they were, save a play or two against state, pretty spectacular in that regard.

and hatcher...wow. jai eugene saw his playing time go down a lot last season. i've barely seen francois out there this year. why won't they limit hatcher? i thought he had a good game against oregon and was alright against state but damn. guy barely practiced all summer due to his injury and is playing a new position. he was good his freshman year on kick coverage and the occasional defensive package. hope he either improves incredibly or has limited snaps by the arkansas game. just reminds me of watching ben voogd at the final four when billy packer was like 'this kid just shouldn't be on the floor right now.'

Solution to Hatcher: On passing situations (3rd long etc.) run a dime package, leave Baker in the game and pull Hatcher, replace him with Loston as you don't need an extra LB especially one that is a liability. Let Loston cover and he will hit you as well...

That coupled with a 2 step drop made took blitzing out of the game plan IMO.

Why hasn't Barrow played more this year at LB? He seemed OK when he stepped in early last year against UNC and since then I've only noticed him in sparingly here and there. Against the running game of Florida our scheme is going to have to be different obviously. Florida seems to be lacking in their WR core and are relying on Demps and Rainey to make most of their plays. Not sure how we will line up to attack these guys.

It was aggravated by the fact that Geno could throw the ball within 2 seconds and would also utilize 7 seconds if he got it.

In short - he was going to be able to get the ball off at any rate , so it was not worth the blitz (without the holding calls).

But I am still a bit disappointed that in spite of it being 6 against 4 , the vaunted D line couldn't get through even once in 85 plays. I really thought and expected someone to break through at least once and stomp on Geno (not after the whistle though )

Beyond that, these offenses always put pressure on linebackers, and that's our weak link. Especially Hatcher. He truly got worked over. He's terrible at zone coverage, and got eaten alive by their Y-Stick concept passing game underneath.

He's proven to be unable to defend the short-zone. He's a penalty waiting to happen when crowding the line and anticipating the snap for an interior gap blitz, and in coverage, he's getting beaten. We already know he takes poor angles (See Arkansas game last year), and now, to add to that, take a gander at the shiteous job of tackling he turned in on that long gainer he gave up. Completley misses the guy and Mathieu has to bail him out.

Hatcher is beyond weak. He's a huge liability for this defense, and we need to get him off the field as much as possible.

1. yes to all your points.

2. thank you.

someone, please share this with Chavis.

I pray he reads it. Thank you GFunk.

I was saying before the season started, that Saban is going to game plan SPECIFICALLY FOR HATCHER.

Now I am also concerned about Florida, since they have both speed guys playing again.

Is Muncie ready?

In the 2nd half, after the 1st drive by our offense, the decision was made as a staff to go into a zone coverage scheme and play the ball in front. This backed the Safeties up even more, and we started playing off the line at corner. This plays STRAIGHT into Holgorsen's hands, as by not re-routing the receiver off the line in this offense means you are at a terrible disadvantage running a zone scheme.

Exactly. Agree 100%.

Chief needs to realize this and not rely on Mo Claiborne to bail the team out.

But this is also the cause of the missed tackles.

LSU worked on tackling all summer long and they were fantastic against Oregon and MSU. Did they suddenly forget how to tackle?

No way. These guys are ballers.

But when a QB has time, he's able to get the ball out more accurately and WRs will have an advantage after the catch. Some of the "missed" tackles were guys diving at WRs legs because WR was already in space.

Chief, you have to grow up as a coach. This team is LOADED with guys who are giving GREAT effort. Don't frick it up.

Interesting post. A few follow-up inquiries:

(1) Which member of the staff made the decision to revert to a defense that was particularly vulnerable to Holgerson's scheme? Why was the decision made?;

(2) With the exception of last season, it appears that the linebacker position has long been a liability under Miles. I thought that Chavis specialized in tutoring linebackers? Is the problem recruiting, scheme, instruction, or all three? Will Davis have an immediate impact next season? Of course, this year, Louisiana produced another outstanding high school linebacker...who promptly committed to Florida. Additionally, Peters is headed for Knoxville. We have to acquire all of the best Louisiana prospects at what is clearly a position of need. (And while I am off on a meandering rant, we better land Collins and Devall as well.)

Loston

Got hurt

hurt himself, using his helmet as a weapon.
2nd time this season.
first time cost LSU a TD vs Oregon, when a stopped drive went on with unsportsmanlike against Loston for attempted launch vs WR.
This was using his head, and hit someone's hip bone and twisted his own neck some.

He needs to stop using his helmet and use his shoulder pads.
1. Helmet hits are dangerous to him and to others.
2. real tackles are more effective.

I don't know.

He was diving at a player form a weird angle.

Wasn't bothered by it.

Wasn't using it as a weapon and wasn't called.

Agreed

I know Loston wants to hit someone hard, but someone needs to teach him how to tackle.

He's either going to kill someone or break his own neck.
