re: My attempt at a preseason LSU football depth chart

Bauer Sharp will start at TE and Echols at right guard. I think Stamps and Delane start at corner with Haulcey and Gilbert at safety. Cooley and Tovino will come in for nickel and dime. Perkins will move to DE and Haulcey and 1 tech come out.

And Reliford and Payton play the boundary. Butler will be on the field side with Pyburn.

I like it, the DE/WR/TE situation is up in the air. But ultimately, starting play 1 doesn’t matter as much as who gets the most snaps. I think the DE position is deep and talented and will be subbed heavily to keep dudes 100% nonstop. Same with DT. We have worn down last several seasons from depth. I doubt we have anyone on the DL play over 65-70% of snaps in a game.
We are going to figure out this year if Sloan can ever be a good OC. The amount of speed the WRs have and the talent, he needs specific plays for guys and misdirection and screens and just get them in space. LSU has not had a screen game in my lifetime really, I would love to see us incorporate one

All I want is for Jardin Gilbert to stay off the field as much as possible.

how is brown going to start in a 3 wide set? hes not starting over our best receiver returning and he won't start over hilton or nic Anderson. a 4th receiver would be treydez detached from the line .
so that we won't have to sub and itll keep the other team from subbing.
he may start in 5 wide sets and he will get plenty of snaps but I dont think he starts over our top 3 guys.

Disagree with this. Bernard Gooden is rated as LSU's best DT and the 25th best DT in the country by On3 and had a very high 247 transfer rating. To have him at 3rd string is just not right. Jacobian Guillory hasn't produced anything. Gooden will definitely start over Guillory.
Bernard Gooden rated as our best DT and top 25 DT in the country link

Maybe on running plays, but TreyDez will probably play majority of snaps to have 4 wideouts essentially.

Disagree here too. Nic Anderson had 800 yards, and averaged 21.0 ypc with 10 TDs in his Freshman year at OU. His only playing year. Zavion Thomas isn't nearly as big a threat as Nic Anderson at 6'4" 225 lb while runing a 4.5. Thomas hasn't put up a season like Nic Anderson has (a freshman while at it), and Thomas averaged 9.5 ypc. Nic Anderson averages 21.0 ypc.

Zavion Thomas over Barion Brown? Na
Neither of the 2 will start. It will be Nic Anderson. As a Freshman at OU in his only season, he averaged 21.0 ypc, 800 yards, and 10 TDs, oh, and he runs a 4.5 at 6'4" 225 lbs. Brown or Thomas don't have near the stats or physical attributes that Nic Anderson does.
Nic Anderson is like Brian Thomas Jr for a comp.
Nic will definitely have more PT than Brown or Thomas.

This is a good analysis. Only part I'd comment on is that I don't think Pyburn has the talent to be a full time starter and occasionally subbed out. I think Gabriel Reliford is more talented than him. Less experienced and not as wise/smart, but more talent. Reliford had like 100 TFL and 40 sacks in 3 yrs of HS. He had 3.5 TFL and 2 sacks in the '24 spring game. Didn't play a ton as true freshman, but I think he gets his year this year.

Stamps is actually one of the highest graded CB in the country lol. Had 14 PBU … forced 10 incompletions which is 2nd in the sec . His 72 PFF grade is top 10 in the sec
Yes. Along that LSU has 2 of the top 15 safeties rated on One3. Cooley and Haulcy rated Top 15. No other college has more than 1 in top 15. Huge upgrade there. LINK
Cooley had 7 turnovers and 7 PD last year. He's too good to not start, but so is Pickett.
I think what may happen to make sure the best 11 get on the field is we either run a 4-2-5 and take out a LB that isn't Perkins or Weeks, or we run a 3-3-5 against more spread out teams.
Our D Line is the weakest group on the Defense. 2 great LBs, but 1 kinda who knows. I think we will have 5 DBs on the field at most times this year. Most defenses make sure the 11 very best are on the field, and build a scheme around that, rather than build a scheme, and put maybe not the best 11 on the field.

Doubt brown came to be a backup at wr. Same for pyburn as a poster said above. Overall looks really close, good stuff
I'm sure Zavion Thomas thought the same when he transferred here and was like 8th in yards last year. Brown doesn't have the stats or physical stature to match Nic Anderson and his 21.0 ypc, 800 yards, 10 TDs at 6'4 225 runs 4.5.
As for Pyburn, his stats are ok. Nothing wows me about his potential. Reliford does wow me about his potential. We'll see.

Payton will come in on 3rd downs
You do realize Patrick Payton is mocked as a 1st round pick, #7 transfer overall amongst all FBS guys who transferred this year amongst all positions, rated as LSU's #1 transfer, and has like 17 sacks in his career right lol? Absolutely zero shot Pyburn or Reliford start over him. Payton is guaranteed a spot. Pyburn and Reliford are probably fighting for who can be the 2nd DE.
A 1st round DE does not sit behind 2 that would probably be UDFA's if left today.

I like this roster except for the safety positions and left tackle depth
Solomon Thomas will come in if either Tackle gets hurts as he is a highly rated Tackle. We wouldn't Ory Williams. Never even heard of the guy. And if both Tackles get hurt, there will be mass shifting. We will somehow get Curne in if both Tackles get hurt.
DJ Chester was recruited on his 247 and ESPN recruiting service profile as a Offensive Tackle. He only played Center because we had no Center last year. I don't know why no one considers him to have potential to be Tackle, maybe because he's big, when he was an OT recruit.
It would be by order if both our starting tackles get hurt on line: DJ Chester, Carius Curne, Braelin Moore, Josh Thompson, Solomon Thomas. To get at least 1 guy on either side with at least some experience.
Our 2 best 2nd string OLman are true freshman: Solomon Thomas and Carius Curne. We would shift around to get the 5 best blockers essentially on the field if 1 or 2 goes down. I'm sure they are cross practicing positions.

I think OL is up in the air. Saw vid that DJ Chester was taking snaps in spring with 1st team center. I don't think Tyree Adams has the talent as others on the line. I think Solomon Thomas is better. Carius Curne is also too good to not get significant playing time. Chester could play all positions of the line as he played center, lot here think OG this year but not confirmed, and he was rated as an OT on recruiting services.

Cooley rated as a top 15 safety in entire FBS amongst both FS and SS.
Those rankings don’t really hold much weight considering Cooley played less than 40 snaps at safety last year. Feels like folks got caught in portal hype of some players and didn’t watch their film. Cooley primarily played nickel for NC state he virtually has no experience at FS. Spears actually has more FS sec experience.

I thought Toviano was moving to Star?
