I loved Chris Jackson. Im not much on Mahmoud Abdul Rauf.
That makes it easy...since CJ played ball at LSU, not that Rauf guy.
I can't imagine we are actually talking about denying a guy the ability to be honored AS A PLAYER because people disgaree with his religious/political beliefs years after he left LSU.

I disagreed with his actions, but given that I knew what type of person he had been at LSU, I knew that for whatever reason he clearly believed them...so while disagreeing I respected his right to have them.
Exactly my thoughts....

Im just saying his extremism will probably prevent him from having the jersey retired.
You should have finished that sentence...you left of, "because LSU fans like myself would boo him and thus make it impossible for LSU to honor him as the tremendously gifted and worthy player his was while at LSU."

CJ im pretty sure never came back for more classes, so i doubt his will ever be retired, graduation is one of the requirements
There's been a lot of debate on this, because Pete never graduated. If that's a requirement, Chris' jersey will never be retired. If basketball skill was the only criterion, Chris had it in spades. There are other requirements.

Pete's jersey is retired yet he is not in the LSU Athletic HOF because the main requirement for that is graduation.

When was the last time anyone here suited up for an NBA team?
[crickets chirp]
No one here has suited up for an NBA team?
Well, why don't you just get Jerry Buss on the phone and tell him that you want to be a Laker and you want to start tonight?
Because playing in the NBA is not a right. It's a priviledge. He has a right to refuse to stand for the national anthem. He doesn't have the right to refuse to stand for the playing of the anthem and still get paid, or even allowed to be in that multi-million dollar private club.
Before all of the Constitutional Law Professors and civil libertarians jump in on this issue, Let me say this: I'm a huge MAR fan. I loved him at LSU...he was my hero in junior high, the good ole days of LSU basketball. I respect CJ/MAR for everything he's overcome, and to be honest, though I highly disagree with his rationale, I would respect him for taking a stand for his beliefs, despite the fact that he would lose so much money by doing so...
...but therein lies the real issue.
MAR refused to stand for the national anthem because "the flag was a symbol of oppression." But he sure as hell didn't have a problem accepting those federal reserve notes backed by the country that same oppressive flag represents. It's an inconsistent integrity.

Chris Jackson lives a difficult life. His struggles with tourettes syndrome has been well documented. I applaud the basketball player and I pray for the soul of the individual. No one has lived MAR's life. No one knows the environment that he grew up in or the sadness that he dealt with. We all have struggles in life. I, for one, struggle with my faith everyday. Not just in temptations but the discerning of God's will for my life. I believe that this struggle is required to grow spiritually and know God intimately.
Many times, I wonder why MAR converted over to the Muslim religion but then I ask myself, why am I a Catholic instead of a Methodist or a Baptist. There are millions of Buhdists and atheists in this world. No one seems to have a problem with most of them. As a Christian, I feel empathy for MAR but I respect him as a human being. God created him as He did billions of our brothers and sisters. I would like to see coach Trent Johnson invite Abdul-Rauf to Baton Rouge and I think we should applaud Rauf for what he has done with his life and not what he believes in. I do not think his jersey should be retired since he left school after just two years. If Rauf earns a degree from LSU, then I agree. Mahmoud is human. We all learn and make mistakes. We are all different in things that we believe in. Mahmoud is still a creation of the most high God and he deserves our respect as a brother in Christ.

you do, but you also have to live the consequences that are created when you choose to exercise your right.
do you have a "right" to embarrass your employer? do you have a "right" to reduce your employers profit?

I think there are two major flaws in this logic:
1) This flaw has been well documented in this thread...
American Money and Benefits:
American Flag:
2) The second flaw is this. The argument most are making in support of CJ/MAR is that what he did at LSU is in no way affected by what he did post-LSU. However, O.J. Simpson, had he not been "acquitted", would present an interesting case to the contrary. No way a 2-time murderer should have his jersey retired or be in any HOF. However, for those using this flawed logic, his actions would be excused since they were post-USC.

Very well said.
I do think he should have his jersey retired though.
Consensus Player of the Year in the SEC, 1989, 1990 ... First-Team All-American 1989, 1990 ...
Set NCAA freshman scoring record, averaging 30.2 points per game ... Just the second freshman at the time to make AP first-team All-American ..

So......you don't think murder/attempted murder and a silent protest are apples and oranges???? Damn!!!

Killing two people is not the same as not standing up for an Anthem, not even close man
