Hope this kid makes it to campus! It's amazing how advanced training has gotten for these high school kids in the last few years.

What you call amazing I call depressing. What happened to kids being kids? He’s got the rest of his career to worry about “velo docs” and hyper-focused training regimens.
It’s a shame that this is what the game has come to at the youth level.

I don’t give a frick if they’re white black korean or fricking Martian. Putting this level of speciality on any youth level player is borderline fricking child abuse.

Here's another perspective...We have special schools for kids that are extremely gifted in Math and Science. We send kids that are musically gifted to special schools. If a kid has an athletic gift that will obviously give them special advantages in life, why is it wrong to give them the ability to optimize it? This kid seems driven and following a plan that he embraces. I think people go too far with criticism of this kind of development. Are there extremes? Yes...for sure. I think it should be judged on a individual basis and not as a stereotyping of all parents/trainers that take part in training these kids.

I didn’t see anyone making him do anything. He seems to enjoy it.
I’m not a fan of mom and dad practically forcing kids to play and train baseball year round, but this doesn’t seem anything like that. He’s very nearly an adult, making his own decisions. Once you’re at the high school varsity level, no matter your talent level, you will fall behind without any personal drive and extra work.

I’m not saying that it’s not necessary to advance to the next level. Quite the contrary. I’m saying it’s a damn shame that it has become necessary.
20 years ago only pro players did these things. 10 years ago college kids did it. Today highschool kids are doing it. In another 10 you’ll be seeing 12 year olds doing it, if they’re not already doing it in some circles.
I don’t think it’s good for the kid and I don’t think it’s good for the sport. I’ll die on this hill I really don’t care who disagrees.

Didn’t look like he was being forced to do any of it. Seems like it all came from self motivation.

Are we now using the argument of “he’s not forced to do it” to determine what is good for minors?
And if he wants to follow his dreams he is forced to do it. This is isn’t a gripe against him or his family. It’s a gripe against the state of youth baseball. It’s constantly upping the ante on physical commitment from the player and financial commitment from the player’s family.
The cost of entry gets higher every year for a game that used to only require a glove and a bat.
There’s no way you can shape your argument that makes that good for the game.
