However, if the CEO makes it clear that I asked and received permission, then he's taking a dominant posture. And that dominant posture could affect the way I'm viewed by the board.

And if the CEO didn't make it clear that he asked, then people would be bitching that Miles is hiding behind something.

I'd also lead to believe Miles didn't call Joe and say "Hey Joe, do you think I can miss the Tiger Tour tonight?"

It was most likely a: "Joe, XYZ came up today. I need to settle this tonight. I'm sure we can handle the Tiger Tour tonight without me, right?

And what if they say no?

when one says no I'll let you know...

As far as Aleva's point, he is simply pointing out that Les didn't just skip town without making sure Aleva had the situation covered. Personally I don't read anything into this.

But this time, there was no Les Miles, the traditional star of LSU’s annual fundraising caravan. “Les called me this morning, and we had something come up,” LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva said. “He had to go out of town. He asked my permission, and I told him to go ahead. He had to go. It was important that he go do it.”

What would Nick Saban or Urban Meyer do if their respective AD's had a similar quote?

My guess is nothing. Last I checked, Joe Alleva is Les Miles' boss.

There have been no less than 5 national sports stories and incessant chatter from pundits on TV and Radio in the last 6 months saying Les is on the hotseat, including direct reporting from the SEC Media Days.

Jokes on you.

I'll save it for when you have an adult in the room with you to explain.

Certainly. It's just commmon courtesy. Apparently the reason was serious enough for Miles to cancel and out of courtesy to his boss he called to explain. I would have done the same and I would darn sure expect a subordinate to call me.
I don't see what the fuss is all about.

K. I'll type slowly. My point had nothing to do with the fact that Les asked permission. It had more to do with his superior acting like a superior in the public domain. At a time when Les is getting killed by the media, I think it's pretty meaningful. If you don't, fine.

Type it again and more slowly for us old folks. Is it your premise that Les Miles ducked out of the meeting because he is a coward?
Didn't he attend and speak at other such meetings around the state?
How should one's superior act? Wouldn't it be courtesy to the attendees for the AD to explain Miles' absence?
In other words, what precisely is your point?

The real question is... Who in TAF really cares that he wasn't there?
