I don't know if this is true but I thought I read he didn't make the team this year.

What's a guy got to do to make the team; he batted .290 last year for Chrisesake.

He is on the 40 man roster just starting the year at AAA.

Is it an injury issue or just thinks he needs some more reps?

TIA

They have outfield depth and they probably think he will get more at bats in AAA. Some times being sent down isn't a bad thing if it leads to more reps. AAA you will face a lot of former big leaguers so you still get some good quality at bats.

Damn, it really is impossible to make the MLB. Maybe they will use him for a trade.

Nola pitched extremely well tonight. I don't think he can be an ace in the bigs but you pair him with one or two quality power pitchers and the Phillies could have a good rotation in the future.

The Rays have 4 solid OFs (Kiermaier, Guyer, Dickerson and Souza) better than him. He's on the 40 man roster so he'll be called up mid season unless there's an injury

glad you don't think he can be an ace. I'll let the Phillies know what they invested in with their 1st pick

Nola wasn't projected to be an Ace when he was drafted, fwiw. That's not a knock against him. He was drafted 7th because of his control and consistency as a pitcher and was a pitcher that would fast track into the majors because of his maturity. Read any scouting report of Nola. He's projected to be a solid #2 or #3 starter in the MLB for a long time but doesn't have the "stuff" to be an Ace. Again, it's not a knock on Nola, it's just the truth.

Baseball America Scouting Report
Baseball Outlook
Fan Graphs

All these scouting reports have him as having a ceiling at a #2 or #3 starter, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I just don't get the whole ace thing. He doesn't have over powering stuff but if your numbers are consistently good then what separates you from an ace

consistently great numbers

the security of his projections is why he was taken in the top 10. rarely do you get a chance to draft a player with that level of certainty, especially in baseball

Never said they wasted a first round pick. I said he is not an ace in the big leagues. He will be a very good pitcher and right now he might be their best pitcher and could be their ace. I was pointing out if the Phillies want to be a good team they need to pair him with a power pitcher who would be the ace and Nola could be a multiple all star as a number 2 guy. I did not mean to slight him in anyway. He just isn't the prototypical ace if you look throughout the league.

Geaux, you can be an ace without having dominating stuff. You just won't be projected to be one. You will have to prove it in the big leagues. Someone like Dallas Keuchel can be used as an example.

King Felix now is another one. Not the guy that use to pump 98 like it was effortless. He's still ace level from changing speeds and eye levels. Plus, very important is the ability to get swing and misses. I don't see why Nola can't do that effectively with his control.

he's made 14 career starts, no one knows if he is an ace or not.

the ace comments come from his stuff. He doesnt have ace stuff, but very good stuff. That doesnt mean he cant turn into an ace.

I agree with Lester. His stuff might not be ace level, but if his control turns to elite 80 grade he could become one. DK doesn't have ace stuff, but his command and sink have allowed him to be a bonifid ace.

Off topic but a #2 or #3 starter gets around 15m in free agency. And there are less than 30 aces so.....he is good at baseball.
