You can see the C. Scott kickoff return at OCS on this Youtube video from high school. 2.46 mark. That was a hell of a game.

Ford is going to be a great back, but I don't see him being shifty enough to return kicks.

I watched Ford for two years in high school. He is surprizingly shifty for his size and has enough speed to get the job done. Sure, he may get run down from behind once or twice in a three year career, but it will be inside the twenty yard line if it occurs. Nobody is going to catch up to him unless they have thirty yards to do it.

He has great hands - never - never - never fumbles.

He is not afraid of contact - he will bring the hammer on you. He will get another five yards after first contact even if they kicking teams gets a fast gunner on him as he catches the ball.

Once he gets going, one defender is not going to stop him in his tracks. Forget arm tackles. Unless you put a solid hit on him, he will not go down.

He would be fantastic as a punt returner. Frosh or not. And I am not worried about a red-shirt loss. ANyone who thinks Ford will be on the team five years from now must be thinking he is going to convert to extra-point kicker - which he can do btw.

red-shirt is a wasted year for him - get him on the field in whatever limited capacity he can contribute and HOPE he is still here THREE years from now.

Thoughts?

I want a PR to:

1.) Be confident as to whether he's going to fair catch or field

2.) Clearly signal fair catch, if appropriate

3.) Cleanly field the ball

4.) Head up field (unless fair caught)

5.) Hold on to the ball

If Michael Ford can do that, and get a decent YPR, that's fine with me.

I really hope we can get a good punt returner for once. I think Ford needs to redshirt, we have 4 very good RBs ahead of him, no reason for him to play this year...unless he has proven to be a great returner. I always thought Richard Murphy should get a shot at returning punts.

me thinks some people in this thread don't realize the difference between high school and major college football...

ETA -- Charles Grant finished his high school career second on Georgia's all-time rushing list (behind Herschel Walker) and returned quite a few punts and kick offs for touchdowns. You think Georgia thought about using him as a punt returner? just sayin.

True freshmen play on special teams every year. Won't be surprised to see him running down field on kickoff and punt coverage teams. Same goes for Loston.

it's one thing to play special teams on punt/kickoff cover. it's another thing to be returning punts...

our punt coverage has sucked for YEARS

blocks in the back, muffed punts, gunners getting beaten off the line of scrimmage ect...

tons of mistakes.

this is one area that I wish would get better.

The frick? How do we get block in the back penalties on punt coverage? The return team gets flagged for this.

Would you want Charles Scott returning kickoffs?

this is terrible logic. no you wouldn't want scott back there, he's too big and too slow. but i suspect you're only saying that because he's an rb.

well kw was back there, he's an rb. hell, one of the best returners i've ever seen was kevin faulk. he was an rb.

so yeah i think you could have ford back there, but i'd rather brooks or claiborne or someone like that. i think people will be really happy with brooks.

Ok Ford and Charles Grant are 2 different people. I gave valid reasons for my statement. Notice how people who have seen him return are all for it and people who have looked at stats are not. All i am saying is our return game has lacked and needs to improve. Just putting Chad Jones back there b/c he's gonna field the ball cleanly is getting old. KW is not the answer and Trindon if he is touched goes down. We need change and i believe Ford could get it done.

Careful now...people around these parts are suspect when it comes to change...

Also, I think you are short changing #8...

I see what you did there

In any case, I think Ron Brooks would get a chance before Ford does.
