Aiken's "advisor" not too happy with Astros
quote:
“We are extremely disappointed that Major League Baseball is allowing the Astros to conduct business in this manner with a complete disregard for the rules governing the draft and the 29 other clubs who have followed those same rules,” said Close, who serves as a family advisor to Aiken.
quote:
The Astros, Close said, made one revised offer to Aiken of $3,168,840 million - the minimum amount required to ensure that they would receive the second overall pick of the 2015 draft as compensation if they failed to sign Aiken.

Close can bitch all he wants. Welcome to the ugly business side of sports, Mr. Aiken. I would do the same thing as the Astros are doing.

I wonder if Aiken has an insurance policy

do advisors get paid? I thought it was unpaid

I read it wrong, I thought he was their agent.

Do high school players get insurance policy? I've only heard of collegiate athletes getting them.
Posted on 7/15/14 at 10:27 am to LSU=Champions
If a company will insure him, I don't think it matters

I'm sure he still gets paid. There's just no contract on the front end so that he doesn't lose his NCAA eligibility. But once that ink touches paper and Aiken is an official pro-athlete, you bet your arse that "advisor" turns into an agent and he gets his fair share.

the advisor may ultimate turn into agent when the contract is signed, but I'm not sure they get a cut of the contract since they aren't negotiating it on behalf of the player
Posted on 7/15/14 at 10:33 am to LSU=Champions
Ahhhh that makes sense.
After looking it up, Close is an agent.
So my argument remains. He is butthurt his paycheck is about to be cut in half.

he is an agent, but he's not acting in the role of an agent
it would be incredibly dumb if he was acting as agent

Close is the agent for Kershaw and Jeter.
Advisor is the technical way of saying Agent for drafted high school players.
Close also is an "advisor" for Jacob Nix.

Aiken is his client regardless of the terminology anyone wants to slap on it. And he's just looking after the best interests of his client.

Whatever his motivations are, the Astros have been working with the MLB to make sure they aren't breaking any rules.
They aren't, so he can call foul all he wants. Life isn't fair.

he is bitching, not because astros broke the rules but to put pressure on the stros
Posted on 7/15/14 at 10:43 am to redfieldk717
Pressure from where? Baseball isn't going to come down on the Astros.
There is obviously damage. Astros have the leverage. They aren't going to pay 6.5 million to a kid with a bum elbow.

He's airing it out to the media. Obviously the Astros are the one and only party that can make this deal, but you don't see why he's doing this?
