Also, if your going to use the 500 record thing as a requirement, than a tournament champion should be above 500 as well

How is the selection process absurd? LSU Couldn't make the tournament. Neither did Ole Miss, Kentucky, or Tennessee. Not a good group to be a part of. Why should they let a team that couldn't finish in the top 2/3rds of their conference compete in the NCAA regional?

Yes, their overall record was better than a couple but what merit did LSU have besides killing Fullerton? None.
