3) It is an even bigger surprise that LSU was hurt by that...if anything it seems like it could help
Kinda reminds me how LSU had the lead over Bama on Rivals in recruiting and won, then a technicality that didn't make any sense, vaulted Bama over LSU in the slimmest of margin and LSU finished #2 instead even though the numbers adding up had LSU #1.

dono if anybody has mentioned it but it could possibly be because Boise State played its 12th game this weekend and won while we were off?

It dropped us one spot. All the more motivation for going out and skullfricking the aggies. We do that and we will be back in the top ten at the end.
You would have never gotten me to believe that we would have a shot at top ten at the beginning of the season.

and your post is why it would have been better for LSU to play #9 MIch State, in the Cap 1, instead of # 17 Tex A&M in the Cotton, even though I think of the Cotton as 'important', due to my age, whereas I think of the Cap 1 as my credit card.

A win by Bama over #9 Big Ten co-champ will put them in the conversation for next years early rankings.

Ok I dont get it.. Colley Matrix states that they DO NOT USE FCS data in his poll.

Do mind sharing where you got the quote from? It may be outdated. Colley used to not use FCS data, but after 2006 decided to start to include them. Though the way the FCS data is included is not the same way that the FBS data is included.

-------------------
Which leads me to my question to Matt,

Matt, since you seem to understand the math behind Colley better than I do...

I know that Colley ranks all of the FCS teams based on the same methodology. After he ranks them, he puts them in groups them and puts them in the FBS polls as "FCS Group 1/2/3, etc."

My questions are:

When an FBS team beats an FCS team does it get rated vs the FCS team's individual ranking or does it get rated against the "FCS Group" rating?

Are these groupings static?

If not, is it possible, that the App St. win over West. Illinois, shuffled the groupings around and ultimately changed everyones SOS and ratings against FCS teams they played?

It gets rated against the "group". Basically Colley lumps teams into groups and that group collectively becomes an FBS team. The best 10 teams in FCS might make group 1 and the next 12 teams makeup group 2. Group 1 "ends" when enough teams have played 12 games (the number of games played by most FBS teams).

no, not at all. They change each week as the FCS rankings change.

That is a really good point and could be it (I would have to look into it). I would have thought those two were already in group 1 (it was a championship game right), but if not yes that could be it.

This whole debacle has got me re-interested in all of this. I am usually a bit sloppy when I re-do the Colley matrix myself, but may see if I can re-create the mistake and see what really went wrong

What I don't understand is how the only team affected was lsu. Shouldn't all the common opponents of the teams in the forgotten game have similar changes? The ripple effect would suggest lots of teams being adjusted.

A lot of teams numerical rating were affected by this, but LSU was one of the only a few teams that like a 0.001 pt change dropped them in the Colley Standings. And LSU was the ONLY team that also had a very small lead in the overall BCS so that the change in Colley affected the BCS standings as well.

And besides the fact that we're leaving championships and millions of dollars up to error-prone computers instead of just bias-prone humans,

Dumb article, computers don't make mistakes, humans do.
