quote:I'm not better than everyone else, but I most certainly am better than people who support language policing. That can't be debated. Selective morality and language policing are beneath those of us who are sane. If my holier than thou attitude offends you, then you should work on being better yourself so that people on the right side of things will respect your opinions. You can start by respecting others' right to speak freely and not concern yourself with telling them what they should and shouldn't say. That's for them to decide and not you or anyone else.
You are full of shite with your better than everyone else attitude and trying to make it seem like I am calling out everyone with random stuff.

1.All morality is selective. That's why sex with an 18 year old is legal but illegal when it's a 14 year old. There is some line (you could argue arbitrary) that always has to be drawn.
2. Free speech is only free to a point. We regulate it all the time with law and rules.
3. Just because you say this is nonsense words not meant to be offensive it doesn't make that so. The chant in and of itself is meant to provoke. Otherwise it wouldn't have organically come about as vulgar. Students I would argue were drawn to it specifically because it was edgy and could offend.
4. By definition you don't get to decide if you are offensive or not. Only others can do that. Not everyone has access to your intent. Innocuous statements offend all the time.
As I said before the AD is making a dumb decision but they have every right to make it.

You're off topic.
Start a thread regarding football players with a past and a coach who occasionally drops the F bomb.
All 80 players don't stand and chant STTDB in unison and neither does our coach.
The student section is very loud and clear when they chant STTDB.
LSU AD doesn't want to hear it. I suspect that there are 2 or 3 factions behind getting the students to quit the chant: 1) networks (I have heard STTDB on national TV), 2) high dollar donors/TAF, 3) LSU Athletic Department.
Additionally, I have seen band members and other students voice their opinion that they don't want to be grouped with the STTDBers.
Comments from the article linked to the OP:
Lamin Barrow: (This is from the Reveille: Reveille article "The band members aren’t the only ones frustrated. Senior linebacker Lamin Barrow said the removal of some of the band’s songs has affected his experience on the field.
“Of course some songs get you a little more hyped than others,” Barrow said. “I loved the ‘Neck’ song. Even when it’s not playing I can hear it in my head. When I hear those trumpets and I hear those horns, I get hyped.” "

Freedom of speech? We have the right to bear arms, too. However, there is some responsibility that goes along with that freedom. You remind of a 17 year old punk at Blue Bayou that wanted to use the "freedom of speech" routine while using very vile and profane language in front of children (which go to the LSU games, I might add). What is free to be said in front of a kindergarten class is VERY different from what is free to be said in the Funny Bone comedy club with 21+ only in the crowd. I'm not trying to set up a police state here, but asking adults to observe responsibility in their actions in public should not be a fight. We have ratings on movies, speed limits on roads, permits for guns, and there is also a limit on speech. There is freedom on all of the above within limits...

Kick them out the games! Obscene students do not represent the University, and they give a false impression about anyone associated with LSU. As an alumnus, I deeply resent the trashy reputation that those low-life "students" give LSU. Oh, and if you are a student reading this and if you think I am infringing on your rights, that is too bad. Grow up and accept some responsibility. You do not have the right to destroy what was once an outstanding university just to satisfy your infantile urges. And Assoc. Prof. Freeman, grow a pair and endorse kicking the soiled brats out the games!

I am an LSU student and i agree with you. It is really frustrating and hard to enjoy the game when the band can't play any of the catchy songs that really pump up the crowd. It's destroying the electric atmosphere, and I personally do not want to be grouped into the same mold as the idiots that surround me at the games who are chanting these things.

I have never heard anyone outsideof baton rouge complain about the language/chant going through on TV. I've never heard national writers say anyanything negative about it.
Its because no one cares. You're watching a sport where people could die or get paralyzed on a play.
Why teach kids that seeing horrific Injuries are fine but ohhh noopp a bad word is way more harmful.
Language police are the worst.

Here's an article from 2007 from USA Today What's more national than USA Today?

Here is something I found from Glenn Dorsey and Jacob Hester back in 2007 (Note that the actual link within this article to the Reveille is invalid.): LINK
Football players ask student section to eliminate vulgar chants
LSU All-American defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey and running back Jacob Hester signed an open letter published Wednesday in The Daily Reveille, asking the student section to tone down its vulgar chants. Here is the text of the letter.
An open letter to the LSU student section in Tiger Stadium.
The LSU student section is the heartbeat of Death Valley and the center of emotion for our great stadium. But during the last two games, vulgar language directed at our opponents by the student section has been disappointing and embarrassing to our school. Your chants can be heard by the national television audience that tunes in from all over America.
When those chants include offensive language, it only damages Louisiana State University. More importantly, these chants can be heard by young children in the stadium who come to see their Tigers play.We need to support our team. You are important to our success. But that doesn't mean you need to insult our opponents. Let us, the players, take care of our opponents through competition on the field. We are taught by our coaches to act like champions, play like champions and win like champions. We need you to do the same.
We hope you are with us. Geaux Tigers!
Glenn Dorsey

Here's a court case I found by reading a 9 year old message board on this very same subject (commentary by the OP, not me):
In the case, Tinker v. Des Moines Indep. Sch. Dist. (1969), the court held that students at school do not "shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate." But, it also states that students may not engage in "vulgar, lewd, obscene and plainly offensive speech" at school. Is a sporting event considered "at school"? (I believe it is. ) If so, than vulgar speech, if one is able to define, "at school" is offensive and action can be taken according to Tinker v. Des Moines Indep. Sch. Dist. (1969). The problem here is that this doesn't apply to adults who do not attend the school.
Does LSU have the right to punish a student for using vulgar language?
According to Tinker v. Des Moines Indep. Sch. Dist. (1969), Yes.

From a random LSU fan's post on another message board:
A ticketholder has rights, too. A person buys a ticket to watch a football game, knowing that the rules LSU has established will enable him to enjoy the game without being distracted, annoyed, or assaulted by miscreants.
Fighting, drinking, obscene behavior, and other unruly activities are prohibited. People have a right to enjoy the game. They paid for the tickets and they expect LSU to establish rules that protect the fans from hooligans.
This isn't about the bill of rights, its about unruly public behavior. Maybe the constitution gives somebody the right to make an arse of himself, but LSU also has the right to eject these asses for breaking house rules.

It took me all of 20 minutes to do research.
The internet is a wonderful place.
Thank you for worrying about what I do with MY time.

CBS is the big complainer about it and yet every home game they stick a crowd microphone right next to the student section. At home you can tell instantly when they cut that microphone off because you can no longer make out what they are saying.

Not reading all that. Doesn't matter. The students will chant what they want no matter how much you bitch about it.
Still, no one in this thread had displayed a lower level of morality than you have, yet you're preaching the most.
