I heard a caller on Miles show ask if the school was inviting Coach Dietzel to the game this weekend since it's SCarolina...he did coach there, he is rather old, could be the last time we see SC at Tiger Stadium while the man is alive

I haven't heard anything else....anyone know if any effort was made to have him at the game?

There is history there for the youngsters and I did a search, SIAP

It would be a nice gesture. I'd like to see him there. Heck, I've even forgiven ole 'Ipana Paul'* for bolting LSU for Army.

*For the young and uninformed: Ipana was a toothpaste and referred to Dietzel's shiny, natural grill work.

i think he retired to Baton Rouge, which is telling of where his loyalties may lie... but did you know he is credited w/ SC's fight song and the block "C" logo that is on the side of our helmet.

yes, kinda my point. Meant alot to LSU and to SCarolina. Did some things there that still mean something, like he did here....

and I've read where he brought the shotgun to SCarolina or something like that but that kinda thing is hard to track down

Looks like the answer is yes. According to a tweet from J Doucet with WAFB.

When I was attending LSU back in the day and Dietzel was the AD, I was at one of the basketball games and he came up and started talking to me as I was waiting for my friend at the concession stand. Mr. Dietzel is a very nice individual and really enjoyed talking with him. Would definitely be a nice gesture to do something special for him this weekend.

one of my favorite LSU teams ever...I was 14

for the rest

eta: I was up early this morning and watched the Old War Skool movie, the 50's part. When PD talked about seeing the boys from that team today, and how they always tell each other that they love each other and he started crying....man that sticks with me like nothing else

it would be great with the South Carolina game. Coached both universities to a conference championship (two at LSU and a NC).

While he probably needed to go, there was no reason for the BOS to humiliate him like they did when he was dismissed.

The man turned around Tiger football...to become National Champs. We owe him a lot. There were lots of coaches who helped him. The only remaining one is Larry Jones. He played and coached under PD. His salary was so pitiful that one could not blame him for leaving. We should all send money to give him a cash memory. He tries to be a good Christian man at this point in his life. Give God the Glory! He sells his books and art work to survive. Buy them...devoted Tiger Fans! Yes, and honor him at every chance.

A true gentleman. His departure from LSU was not as acrimonious as Saban's. Personalities might have been a part of this.

same thing at SC. he was brought in with the idea that he'd be the HC/AD for a short while, but stay on as AD. when he was let go as HC, they didn't keep him as AD. he would have helped us with continuity that screwed w/ our football & basketball during the 70's and 80's. he is also responsible for getting us out of the ACC because he hated getting screwed over by Duke and UNC. we'll always Dietzel for that.

I know Gridiron thankfully has him as a Stand-in anytime Miles runs 97 minutes late at lunchtime on a Friday, which is often.
