I knew LSU struggled offensively in the redzone but I had no clue they were 115 in the country in redzone defense. Opponents have scored 16 out of 17 times.

Not shocked that Bama is #1 in both redzone offense and defense.

But why is LSU near the bottom in redzone defense? Is this a result of gifted field position due to turnovers or is it a real problem?

But how many times have they been in the red zone?

not a lot, I realize that, but you have to admit it's still odd. LSU's defense ranks high in pretty much every other area, but that just seems wrong.

Kinda hard to stop someone from scoring in the red zone when it is just a chip shot field goal

Bu this is true for everyone. Odd to see a good defense so low on this list.

This. I never understood why they keep track of how many field goals someone kicks when they reach the red zone. The real stat is how many TDs does someone score or score against you once they reach the red zone.

How many attempts does Bama have in that category?

they've also given up TD's nearly 50% of the time as well. Either way, it still doesn't seem like a fluke.

(correction: they've given up 13 TD's and 3 FG's)

Look at their company. not the greatest

111 Baylor
112 Wake Forest
113 Ohio
114 Texas Tech
115 Colorado
LSU
117 Texas
118 Tenn
119 Hawaii
Conn

Exactly. Plus each game is played differently. I'm sure a lot of teams played more aggressively vs Bama in the red zone trying to get 7 instead of just taking the sure 3 Pts vs us in a low scoring game

More important red zone defense stat is points per red zone visit (i.e., are you giving up TDs or FGs). I wonder where LSU and Alabama rank there?

35 drives in the red zone 34 scores. The lone miss was a fumble by AJ in the Mizzou game. The breakdown on scores is 26 TD's/8 FG's.

As far as Bama's RZ Def, they've allowed 15 drives into the RZ. 8 scores - 6 TD's/2 FG's

I actually looked at it wrong.

LSU has given up 13 TD's in 17 attempts; only 3 FG's

Looks like Alabama is giving up 48 points in 15 trips for a 3.2 average per red zone visit.

LSU is 97 points in 17 trips for a 5.7 average per red zone visit.

Pretty significant difference still.

Red Zone Defense, Points per possession:

Alabama:

15 possessions, 48 points allowed: 3.2 points per possession

LSU:

17 possessions, 97 points allowed: 5.7 points per possession

Red Zone Offense, Points per possession:

Alabama:

35 possessions, 205 points scored: 5.9 points per possession

LSU:

34 possessions, 145 points scored: 4.3 points per possession

Alabama is clearly performing much better in the red zone on both sides of the ball so far based on pure numbers (of course this doesn't account for strength of possession).
