Bama attacked our weakness and we just ran it at the strongest part of their defense, plain and simple. They attacked our flats, which were clearly the weakest point of the defense all year. We attacked their D-line and linebackers, which were the strongest part of their defense.

Yes, I know all of that. Apparently you missed the point I was attempting to make; which was: we don't need to completely change our offensive philosophy, we need a QB who can execute it properly.

I just think we have perfect personnel to run a very efficient, very balanced pro style attack that uses a ton of play action and takes shots down the field.

Ha my fault, and I agree with you. Nothing wrong with what we did last year up until the final game of the season when we became less than conservative and more than counter productive.

I never said we need to go to the spread. I was just pointing out that trying to run over a team like Bama isn't ever going to work. You have to throw the ball.

Over/under on how many people show up in this thread that have no idea what a spread offense is.

Already happened.

WHY? Dear God, we just rammed it down everyone's throat playing power football last year. If we want to mix in some spread thats fine, but if we get away from what won us the first 13 games last year I will be annoyed. Power football >>>>>> spread

And not being able to do anything else cost us a national championship. You HAVE to be able to throw the ball in today's game. Bama figured that @#!*% out and took us to the woodshed.

Our QB missed several opportunities to make the pass play. He made some mistakes and it showed.

Bama threw mostly short stuff with some really safe out patterns. Those patterns required some great throws (which were made) and some great catches (which were made).

Even with all the passing Bama did, a couple of completed reads and completions by our QB and the game is different.....just a couple of reads.

Bama pretty much took their Heisman canidate out the gameplan until late.

We need a QB that can make the reads and have the confidence to make the attempt. I believe there will be more passing plays next year just to improve Mett's confidence and to give the def. coordinator something to think about.

However, we are built and we are a power run team. I hope we start to lean toward with I saw with the Giants last night. Run set up pass.

FYI for the clueless

The spread offense is an offensive scheme in American and Canadian football that is used at every level of the game including professional (NFL, CFL), college (NCAA, NAIA, CIS), and high school programs across America and Canada. The spread offense begins with the quarterback in the shotgun formation most of the time, and often employs a no-huddle approach. The fundamental nature of the spread offense involves spreading the field horizontally using 3, 4, and even 5-receiver sets. Some implementations of the spread also feature wide splits between the offensive linemen. The object of the spread offense is to open up multiple vertical seams for both the running and passing game to exploit, as the defense is forced to spread itself thin across the field (a "horizontal stretch") to cover everyone.

Regardles for those who don't even know what the hell it means. All you need to know LSU+spread= fail. Power football has worked. If we need to game plan and use spread sets, I'm all for it. LSU is at it's best as a power football team.

You will NEVER beat Bama if you think you only have to pass in obvious situations. We need to throw the ball more on 1st down and actually try a pass in the middle of the field to a TE every now and then.

I never said that. I mean play call similar to this year with a good mix of run involved but have the ability to throw on obvious throwing situations

I dont mean only throw then, just saying we need to be able to do that to be successful

We fricking better not. We have 6 god damned RBs and a converted DT playing FB. We need to continue with the power running, play action offense we ran with Lee. There was nothing wrong with that offense.

I give it about a 10% chance LSU will primarily run some form of the spread this year.

Yeah it seems like most people automatically assume that when a team says there running the spread offense that they are going to run the one famous play, the spread option read, every single time.

So is the discussioon now about people's preception of what a spread offense is? Or the way that people are negatively reacting to LSU running any form of spread? Regardless if people are freaking out because they don't know what the spread is, they have a right to be freaked out at how stupid it would be. They are right for the wrong reasons, but they are still right.

You can power run from the spread.

Florida and Auburn did it all the time.

Running a power offense from the shotgun is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. It is like playing an entire game on defense out of goal line and trying to stop a passing team. It can be effective but is just so stupid when you can line up under center and run the damn ball.

I would be all for it, especially if we bring back the WR screen that used to work so good with Early. It makes sense to make use of all the speedy receivers we have, a spread would definitely put pressure on the defense to not make a mistake, because it would most likely mean a big gain.

What happens if we add complexity back to the offense knowing Mett can handle it, and he gets hurt?

So you propose we design our offense based on the abilities of a player who you hope doesn't see a meaningful snap?
