it isn't about offending people. they simply didn't wanna put a cross on an official LSU photo because doing so could open them up to controversy

some group seeing a cross on an LSU photo could try and cause a &@$%storm over it just like some people are trying to cause drama over them taking it out

What controversy did they anticipate?

Does our Admin really not want students who are followers of Jesus to express their faith on campus or at sporting events?

What some of us are contesting is the working principle behind their actions. Apparently, they feel they can achieve a "worldview neutral" position; they can't. Nor do they understand that to remove an already present Christian symbol is an anti-Christian act plain and simple.

Moreover, for them to hide behind a disclaimer on the back of tickets is lightwieght. They are state employees. They answer to us. It is right for us to challenge their actions on this.

Wow, the amount of atheist on this board is mind blowing. The funny part is we can't express our views on religion but you bastards pave the way for Muslims, truly sad.

I'm offended that they removed it. And I'm probably in the MAJORITY not the MINORITY.

Don't agree with removing the cross, especially since the nation is being SOOOOOO appologetic about the negative actions recently commited toward the muslim religion... just saying, the majority of the people in this nation (let alone in this state) are in someway part the christian faith... its not like people aren't accustomed to seeing it. don't know what all the fuss was about photoshopping it

Did you actually take the time to read Herb Vincent's rationale for airburshing the crosses?

Apparently, you didn't:

quote:

Those crosses were airbrushed out. ... We don’t want to convey any religious or political message,” said Associate Vice Chancellor for University Relations and Senior Associate Athletics Director Herb Vincent.

Vincent can appreciate what you seem incapable of grasping. Namely, that incorporating religious symbols in a formal LSU promotional communication creates the impression that a state funded university is making a religious statement. This isn't difficult to comprehend. The university appropriately wielded its clear contractual rights.

Vincent didn't incorporate anything. The "religious symbols" were already present in the photo. The Admin took direct action to explicitly remove them. That in itself is a religious message; it communicates a worldview.

There is no such thing as a worldview neutral position. Some worldview will be espoused. In this case, the state funded university made an anti-Christian statement.

Does our Admin really want to convey that we (LSU) don't want it known that some of its student body are followers of Jesus? Do they really not want to communicate that LSU is ok with religious expression at sporting events? If one of our players has a Jesus or Cross tatoo on say his forearm, will they censor that out as well?

BTW, what contractural rights are in play here?

I'm curious, if a football player was wearing a crucifix that came out from under his jersey during a run or more commonly a crucifix comes out from underneath a baseball player's jersey during a play and a picture is taken would or does the university photoshop those pics? While I'm not familiar with different apparel for different religions what do they do with a picture which someone is wearing certain clothing pertaining to their religion?

To me it's unnecessary censorship. It's more offensive to take it out than to leave it in. I wouldn't have even noticed the crosses if they would have just left them in. Bad move LSU.

then how is having George Bush speaking at a graduation not considered associating itself politically yet leaving the cross in the picture is considered asscoaiting itslef with a religion?

He says LSU doesn't want to portray religious or political messages but, they get people like George W. and Bob Schieffer to do commencement speeches. I could really care less who does my commencement speech but his statement in flawed in that interview.

SI can use picture of HB to sell magazines and university can use altered pictures to promote themself. We are only pawns in the giant media game. Everybody needs to wake up and realize this. The truth is optional, the "spin" or implied message is all that counts.

By taking off the cross I promise they angered/offended a lot more people than if they would have left it on.

Bad move LSU and I am personally offended.

Also, please don't give me that crap about leaving religion out of it. The kids had a small cross on their shoulder, it wasn't like they had a huge banner.

I will never understand why atheist make such a big deal about religion in public. If you don't like it then just ignore it. I don't complain when they want to huge a tree. Sure I clown tree huggers but I don't try to stop them.
