McMahon’s crowning achievement at LSU was getting lucky on a fluke play that beat Kentucky a couple of years ago.

And then essentially benched that guy for Dji Bailey

why administrators are giving him such a long rope

Optics. What am I trying to say is that you have a new athletic director and it looks bad to fire two major sports coaches in mid-season the same year. Not like it's insider news, but believe me when I say he will be fired the day after his last game

That's FAR from a death penalty

Over the last 4 years LSU has been the worst program in the SEC. (Excluding Texas and OU, who just joined last season), LSU has the fewest conference wins during that time period...by quite a significant margin. LSU is the only SEC program to not make the NCAA Tournament over the last 4 seasons. And that includes Texas and OU who both made the NCAAT last season in their first year in the SEC.

Simply put, this program hasn't even been competitive for 4 years. And the fan support has dwindled to a very low level. For three of the last 4 seasons LSU's NCAA hopes have been gone before the calendar even turned to February. This year was the 3rd time in 4 seasons LSU started SEC play 1-7. Even the "best" season in the last 4 years wasn't good. LSU finished 1 game over .500 (17-16) with a decisive loss at home vs. N. Texas, with less than 2,000 people in the crowd, in the NIT....which LSU only got into because Ole Miss turned down the invite.

While technically the program didn't shut down (i.e. death penalty), it basically has for all intents and purposes. This is the longest stretch of sustained losing since the mid-late 90's (a period where LSU had to actually deal with significant sanctions). The fan support is at a decades long low.

I don’t understand why he’s here still.

The reason is that the prior administration did not want the job open last season with Wade at McNeese and likely to get a major conf. offer. There was a strong push behind the scenes to get Wade back to LSU at the end of last season. Woodward/Tate were NOT going re-hire him. So rather than fight that fight, they just didn't make the LSU job open. The hope was that with one more season MM would finally win. But more importantly, Wade would be elsewhere and the admin wouldn't have to deal with a push to bring him back.

The result: Tate and Woodward got pushed out by those with financial and political clout.

You do realize if they are lucky enough to hire the right guy it will only take 1 offseason to be competitive in the age of NIL.I hope everybody give the new coach a chance.
