The LSU baseball team lived up to its potential this year. There was never the talent required to win it all.
I see it differently.
They hit .222 in the NCAA post season (if you don't look at Lehigh, .240-something if you do). That's a 100-point drop from the regular season.
They had a few solid pitchers ... when they were on their game, but when they weren't they really weren't.
7 of the 8 position players were drafted and are now pro ball players.
I feel as if this team really had a shot at winning it all this year. It is hard to put a finger on it, but for some reason this team the past month has struggled with consistently pulling it all together. When they were firing on all eight cylinders I think think they could've gone toe-to-toe with any team out there and could've won it all.
Sure, they had troubles with pitching, but had the bats to back them up. Then when the bats slumped the pitching was there to pull them through it (I'm looking at the Lange/Poche back-to-back performance a couple of weeks ago. It almost seems as if they were able to do two things at once: play further into the post season than their performance should've allowed; and not live up to their full potential. I don't know what to call that. Is that a coaching problem?
Either way, I've had a hell of a time watching these men this year and the past few years (for those leaving). I'll miss watching you guys.

Earlier in the season, everybody thought that LSU had a shot to win it all this year.
That was a mirage.
During the post-season, the hitters got scouted and cooled off. The pitching did not improve. The bullpen did not improve. The competition did indeed improve.
Once this team accomplished the greatness of making it to the College World Series, it did not come close to showing itself to be one of the better teams in the tournament. Beaten badly. Struggled, at first, against CS-Fullerton and beaten badly again.
Sure, we all thought this team had a chance to win it all. But, once the reality of competition in the CWS arrived, the team didn't come close to being the best in the tournament.
But I agree that the team accomplished much to be proud of. I believe that they achieved their maximum potential.

Can you factor into those stats when they face the bottom third of the lineup?

I think everyone knew coming into this tournament we were going to have to rely heavily on our two aces. If we take the first two games, I feel we had enough pitching to win at least 1/2. If we were to have swept through the first 3 games and had Poche and Lange to be available to pitch for 2/3 championship series games, I'd put us at great odds to win the thing. Problem is, that's a hell of a gamble. If it doesn't work out, we get what we got. I had blind faith after we lost that first game, but I knew it would be rough sledding; our team isn't built to come from the losers bracket in the CWS. It's built to win 2/3 series.
It was a great season, but we always want more. And there is at least one silver lining: Basically the entire returning pitching staff, mostly Freshman and Sophomores, will have recorded innings (or at least appearances) in the CWS. That's great experience, as I expect us to be back soon and experience on the big stage is always great to have.

Broken record or not these are eye popping and easily pass the ole feel test.
Those are the guys who were rocking and rolling.
I enjoyed the perspective provided in OP
