You would think work would get out and that recruits would stay away from coaches and schools that do this for fear of the risk of being cut. I hope that Iowa uses this in recruiting against schools that do and can show the recruit that he may get cut if that school over signs players and that at Iowa he is guaranteed a scholarship if he qualifies.
There are reasons they can do this in the SEC.

The only way to handle it differently would be to only sign the limit, but then you run the risk of having classes like Iowa where you end up with less than the limit. And then could you imagine the shite that would then be said about Les?
I guess you are damned if you do damned if you don't. People are still going to say Les messed up.
These types of situations should be regulated by the NCAA. They should step in and say no more oversigning players. Just like in Baseball where you couldn't compete unless you did steroids when there was no testing, which then forced players that may have not cheated to cheat.

I don't think it's that big of a deal. These kids know that it's a risk. But they are willing to chance it to play for the best teams.
They will end up with someone. It's not like they are being thrown out on the street and will never get to play again.

I am in no way advocating a "Ferentz" strategy. That would be suicide w/ Nutt, Saban, Meyer, et.al.
It seems to me that either:
1) Les Miles did not prepare Elliot Porter for the greyshirt
or
2) Elliot Porter did not take his warnings to heart ( and then lied about it, according to some).
I don't really know what happened. But based on previous incidents, I'm betting on a Miles miscomunication.

You don't think its a big deal that a player decides on a school that offered him a scholarship and then moves to the school and enrolls in school, but then is told he doesn't have a scholarship? I think that is a big deal and something that should never happen since it would be so easy to correct.

You do realize that he still has a schollie offer, in January not August. Kid still has a free ride to LSU if he wants it. He has to wait 1 semester to get it.
Taht sucks, but it is not the end of the world.

It sucks. But if these players are willing to risk it then I am not going to lose sleep over it.
They can alwaysdo what you are hoping for, go to a lesser program where there is no chance of this happening. Again, there is a reason to choose a school where this is a risk over another where they don't have to worry about it.

Wow, and you get to play for Iowa in the Big Ten. Good luck with that strategy...

Never heard of a team over signing before.
Then you don't follow recruiting AT ALL.
This
There is constant attrition on football teams too... if you didn't sign near 20-25 most years you'd probably not be close to the 85 cap
Kids stop playing, get thrown off the team, transfer, go pro... whatever. There are always hurt feelings and unmet expectations when guys who were big men on high school campus try to jump to the college level and can't get on the field

My problem with blaming Miles for the miscommunication is that Miles was probably not the only person discussing the scholarship issues with this kid. Miles has the ultimate call on the scholarship, but I am certain that either an assistant coach/support staff person also discussed the possibility with Porter at some time before Tuesday.

Are you suggestng something contractual? That could be messy. Do we really want NCAA meddling in this?
Funny all the boo hooing over this fluke incident, while many schools award scholarships with intent of gradution and see recipients go Pro. Much more common problem Ath Depts have to deal with.

Iowa ? Please ! lol
Not saying Iowa is on LSU's level, but they are not a bad program and is a great place to live. Over the past 30 years, Iowa has had a pretty successful program that seems to do things the right way and for that I am proud to be a fan.
I know that Iowa will never attract the kind of recruits to compete year in and year out for top 10 rankings, but they get kids that work hard and overachievers. Don't think they have ever had a recruiting class in the top 10 let alone top 25, but have finished in the top 10 four times this decade.

Two things:
1) Every nationally significant college football team is doing this. If there is not serious competition for a limited number of spots (and guys are not getting cut because they can't do it) then the competition in the program is not good enough
2) Most of these kids don't think they will be the one greyshirted - just like most special athletes will still go to a premiere school where there is competition for PT instead of going to a lesser program where they are nearly guaranteed a spot.
Have a look back at the list of 4 and 5 star players Pete Carroll had 2nd, 3rd string or never on the field at USC... it was a big list because those guys all figured they were different and they would end up starting - even tho by the numbers they obviously all couldn't
I hope Porter chooses to stay at LSU and ends up playing very well but... If you get grey-shirted the staff is telling you that you are probably at least the 26th or 27th most important signee of that class. IF that evaluation is correct those kids end up transferring or just playing in very limited time anyway.

Not saying anything contractual. Just saying the NCAA should step in like they did this year with the 25 scholarship limit. They should step in and say you can't have players on scholarship and players signed that are greater than 85. That would end all of this.

I'm confused by your post - they already limit schollies to 25/year and 85 total

No biggie, it comes with being on another team's board. I'm a big boy, I don't cry too much.

You can only enroll 25 kids per year on schollie and have only 85 on schollie total. Add up 25x4, thats 100. so 15 kids every 4 years have got to quit, to sign 25. A schollie is per year, they are not for 4 years, they get renewed every year or they don't. Thats the rules per NCAA.
