Numbers 30 and (I think) 37 had some hops in them
Yeah....as in the #37 is retired, only 1 of 2 retired numbers at LSU. Tommy Cassanova!
The other retired number is 20 for Billy Cannon.
I saw every home game in 68 and 69. By the Fall of 70, I was in the Navy. My lottery number was low!!
Geaux Tigers!!

The 1970 team was very good, but the '69 team was worthy of national championship discussion. The team lost by 3 points to Ole Miss when Coach Mac disdained a FG attempt to tie the game and instead went for a 4th down. It should have been LSU vs. Texas in the Cotton Bowl for the NC. Instead, LSU was snubbed by Cotton and Sugar ... and ended up instead receiving a bid to play Houston in the Bluebonnet Bowl. They did the right thing by saying thanks, but no thanks. Bad feelings remained for years between LSU and the Cotton and Sugar Bowls.

One of the best game signs I ever saw, "Archie can't score with a broken bone"

The Cotton Bowl invited Notre Dame ahead of LSU which for many Tiger fans was the beginning of the hatred of Notre Dame.

Someone might want to tell Karnell Hatcher this...
LSU Roster

Tommy Casanova was a little before my time....
But from everything I've heard, his number should have been retired.

Remember him well as a kid. Always on the front of the Morning Advocate back in the day. Just could not make out his number in the video and did not dawn on me who it was until our older Tiger fans jogged my memory.

His jersey was retired, not his number.

The retirement of the jerseys of Casanova, McDonald and Macklin comes under a new provision of the LSU jersey retirement bylaws that says the retirement of an athlete's jersey in a particular sport does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach. This provision applies only to jerseys retired after January 1, 2007, so the numbers worn by Maravich, Pettit, O'Neal, Cannon and Bertman may never again be worn by future student-athletes in their respective sports.

Bad feelings against ND started then ... absolutely right.
Notre Dame agreed to break its self-imposed ban on post-season bowls by agreeing to play Texas in the Cotton Bowl. However, I think LSU was led to believe that it would play in the Cotton Bowl against Texas until ND announced late in the season that it had changed its policy on playing in bowls. I'm unsure of the timing, but I know many Tiger fans felt that LSU was unceremoniously dumped by the Cotton Bowl only after ND made the surprising announcement. Either way, the team was snubbed big-time and Mac never forgave the Cotton Bowl. The Sugar Bowl people didn't want LSU, and the team didn't want to play the University of Houston in what would have been a home game for UH in the Bluebonnet Bowl.
We can only speculate how that '69 LSU defense would have fared against the wishbone of Texas. LSU had a smart, coordinated defense. They didn't have great size, but had good quickness and were very sound fundamentally.

That was before affirmative action. Love the flags. Brings back great memories when our country was safe from people like Obama.

Three Punt Returns for TD's is still a NCAA Record. One by Craig Burns and two by Tommy Casanova in the same game. 61-17 LSU!!!!

I don't remember this game as I was only 3; but just afterwards, my dad poured our driveway and etched the scored into the drying cement. I played basketball for years over LSU 61 Ole Miss 17 - 1970.
