LSU finished 16th in the league. They weren’t getting an NIT bid even if they wanted it.
That's not true at all.
The NIT format provides automatic invitations to the top two SEC based upon computer metrics NOT conference standings who did not make the NCAA Tournament. Auburn was first in that line and they accepted a NIT bid. Oklahoma was 2nd, they declined the bid. LSU would have been third in the pecking order. There was no formal announcement, but given LSU isn't in the field it's clear LSU declined too.

If the plan is to bring back CMM, then why not try to build momentum for next season by winning a couple of games in the NIT?
Because the team that would have played in the NIT wouldn't be the team that plays next year. It would be, by and large, and entirely new roster. Thus, there wouldn't really be any "momentum". I suppose you could say maybe from a fan perspective there could be. But LSU did the NIT two years ago...and it was bad. The announced attendance was just over 2,000 people. The actual attendance was probably less than that.
The players didn't want to keep practicing another week (more if they won) for a meaningless tournament and the fans weren't going to show up.

I assure you there isn't a university in the country who wouldn't hang a banner if they won.
You are wrong. A bunch of schools with proud historic basketball programs like UCLA, UNC, Duke, and Kentucky won't ever play in the NIT again.

If we don't get Will Wade back, expect us to run it back since they don't give a frick about men's basketball.
That's stupid, illogical and short sighted. It doesn't have to be Wade. "Wade or bust" would suggest that they can't find anyone else better than McMahon. The only reasonable explanation if McMahon is retained is that there is no appetite for the buyout and cost of a replacement staff. We don't know if there is the money for a Wade return.
People talk easily about using "big donor" money but that well is not bottomless. No one is coming to LSU without an ironclad guarantee tying another anchor to an already bloated athletic budget. There's no new money coming in until 2030 when the media rights deal expires.
Again, if there is the will and money to replace McMahon, then it won't just hinge on Wade. Wade didn't exactly perform miracles this year at NC State. He didn't accomplish as much at NC State as the Virginia head coach or the Vandy head coach in their first year.

Men’s bball has fallen so far, can’t even get a bid to the NIT now.

I believe they actually issued a statement through Lowe that they declined, but I’m too lazy to dig it up.

I agree 10000%. I'd love to see Wade return too. But moving on from McMahon MUST be objective No. 1 if this program wants to have any chance at success. REAL success, not "success" relative to how low the bar for such McMahon has sunk it to.

It's not that they can't find anyone else better. It's that no one has looked to see if there is anyone better besides Wade. It is the Kiffin search. When LSU fired BK there was no "plan". The target was Kiffin alone with ZERO consensus on a second candidate if Kiffin declined. The difference there was LSU had already fired BK, so they HAD to hire a new HC. Here, LSU hasn't fired McMahon.
The longer things remain silent, the more it becomes clear Wade is the only target. That means the powers that be better hit it NOW because (a) Wade isn't going to be "cheaper" next season and (b) LSU's expenses (mostly football related) aren't decreasing next year.
Donors have always had big input in coaching changes. However, I think in the current state of LSU athletics the donors AND political factors are calling the shots. Verge is just a "yes man". The political factors want Wade and Wade alone. They wanted him last season...which a big reason Tate and Woodward are no longer employed by LSU. But with that meddling comes a lack of a full analysis. Meaning that the political faction (which included some wealthy donors) is not looking to fix LSU basketball by any means possible. They just trying to score political points and fix LSU basketball with ONE choice. If that doesn't happen, then they don't care enough to make any other change.

They declined it. As they should have.
