Who: Vanderbilt Commodores
When: Thursday, March 6 | 6:00pm (cst)
Where: Memorial Gym (14, 316 | 40th NCAA) Nashville, TN
How: TV: ESPN2, Radio: 98.1FM, Stream: ESPN3.com

Memorial Gym has historically been a very difficult place to play. One of the biggest reason's is the location of the teams benches. This really hurts the coaches ability to speak to players during gameplay. This means you must have good point guard play in Memorial.

Vanderbilt is on a two game losing streak after losing to Florida by 3 at home and then 38 at Tennessee. LSU has lost their last 7 road games, but played a very inspired road game against Kentucky two weeks ago before getting beat handily by Florida this weekend on the road by 18.

LSU is still playing for better position in the SEC tournament and two wins to finish the season are much needed. They will need leadership from Anthony Hickey to leave Memorial with a win. He was held to only his second negative assist:turnover ratio of the season at Florida with 1 assist and 2 turnovers.

When these two met in Baton Rouge, LSU got the best of the Commodores behind Johnny O'Bryants 22 point, 12 rebound performance. O'Bryant got to the line 14 times in the game and created a big problem for Vanderbilt who only has a couple post men. The Tigers outrebounded Vanderbilt by 24 in their first game and duplicating that effort will be key for LSU.

Vanderbilt's starting lineup:

Kyle Fuller (6'1" 188) - 11.4ppg, 4.3apg, 73.1%ft, 26.2%3pt
Dai-Jon Parker (6'3" 190) - 7.6ppg, 4.4rpg, 3.2apg, 37.3%3pt
Rod Odom (6'9" 212) - 13.8ppg, 5.4rpg, 70.9%ft, 40%3pt
James Siakam (6'7" 215) - 7.6ppg, 5.4rpg, 70.1%ft, 0.0%3pt
Damian Jones (6'10" 235) - 11.2ppg, 5.5rpg, 54.1%ft, 54.9%fg

Vandy Quality Wins:
Home vs 21 Tennessee (64-60)
Away vs 82 Georgia (59-54)
Home vs 59 Missouri (78-75)
Home vs 68 Georgia St (86-80)

Vandy Bad Losses:
Away vs 146 South Carolina (65-59)
Away vs 129 Butler (85-77)
Away vs 102 Alabama (68-63)

LSU needs to do a better job on Rod Odom who scored 20 against LSU in their first meeting. He was 4/6 from deep. It will also be important for LSU to distupt the rhythm of Vanderbilt by harrassing PG Kyle Fuller. LSU did a good job on him in the first game forcing 5 turnovers from the junior PG. He has two double doubles this season, one against Kentucky (17pts, 10ast) and one against Tennessee (12pts, 10ast).

Keys to the Game:

Rebounding | LSU needs to win the rebounding battle by a large margin. They have the bodies to really get to the boards and really outbattle the Commodores.

Foul Trouble | LSU needs to take the ball inside and force Vanderbilt into foul trouble with their limited bench. LSU on the other hand needs to stay out of foul trouble.

PG Play | With the Coaches box being so far away from play, Anthony Hickey needs to be a court leader. The team needs to communicate well during breaks as well as on the court. The setup has left very good teams looking clueless.

Prediction:
LSU 68, Vanderbilt 65

Just hope we can defend the perimeter for one GD game on the road.

Im worried about Odom on Martin. He needs to play much better defense than he has this year. Odom could kill us from outside again and really hurt our chances.

Gonna need serious rebounding from JOB and Mickey. Could easily see both get double doubles.

I hope our vets play well. When they do good things tend to happe. Hickey usually turns up one way or another. Need something from coleman, strong game from johnny and andre to hit a couple shots. That and play some damn defense, take care of the GD ball.

shitty troll attempt bro

......on another note I really hope we win both games this week

going 10-8 in the SEC would make me feel a little better, its obvious that the middle of the pack of the league has improved this year from last year, if we could go 10-8, have a decent showing in Atlanta, it would calm my frustrations...........somewhat

Yea 10-8 would be nice. I felt like LSU had a great shot at 11-13 SEC wins, so 10 would be a disappointment still, but I wouldn't be as disappointed.

Yeah, I (sort of) resigned quite a while back to the fact that this just isn't a tournament team. Wildly inconsistent and lacking true leadership on the court. I really just want to finish strong and have a nice taste in my mouth for the offseason. Building blocks for the future.

Me too.
Although, having said that, I watched Florida against S. Carolina last night. S.Car kept the game very close in the 1st half and pushed the perimeter out. Difference was that when we played Florida Saturday, we also did a lot of pushing out the perimeter, only to find that FL suddenly had players that could shoot 3's from way outside, even though they usually don't shoot the 3 well (except for Frazier, who we kept leaving open).
S. Car did exactly the same as us, but the shooters were clanging the rim over and over in the 1st. In the 2nd half, Frazier was left open time & time again and killed them with 11 threes! He won the game for FL.
S. Car was better than us at defending the drive through the middle.

My point being that we seem to be able to defend the 3 from the zone, IF our opponent is not on a shooting the 3 spree. IMO when we're facing a hot shooting team, we go man-man, and bring out the FC press for a while.
What we can't do is defend the drive through the paint. Our guards are always stuck in the screens and don't seem to be able avoid them. They get little help defending the screen.

Also, I don't know if anyone else notices, but when in zone, quite often, Anthony has one eye on our wing defenders (namely Martin). I've seen him point and call out to direct, and then he loses his position and someone gets by. You can't do that when you're facing front, you need to pay attention to who's in front of you and where they're sending the ball. Not sure why he does this, not confident about his big defenders?

No one puts their hands straight up - fundamentals.

i agree, I believe its by a stroke of luck that we have almost all passive guys on the court, no real verbal leaders....there's nothing wrong with our players, its just by random chance that all their personality types are very laid back, we need a player on our team that fires all of them up......hoping/thinking maybe Gray will give us that next year

We're going to miss Malik this game.

We have no bench depth again - our starters have been playing major minutes for the past 5 or so games. I want us to FC press for some of the time, but we're undermanned to use it often.

I'm also concerned that, due to the short turnaround after tonight till the Georgia game on Sat, we're going to be worn out for our last home game.

legitimate concern. Gonna be tough to hit the road and play physical , which is our strength vs Vandy, then on 2 days rest be ready to play for Senior night in a critical game vs a top 4 sec opponent.

I know I've asked this question too many times but what finish you think puts us in the NIT? I know we would have to win the SEC Tourney for NCAA (admittedly not a lot of confidence in that happening). I saw a NIT Bracketology post the other day with us in it. You think we have to win these last 2 and maybe 1 in the SEC Tourney to get in?

I think we are in the NIT probably no matter what. I'd say another win and we should be pretty locked in. I still think LSU has 2-3 wins left in them this season. I'm hoping we can get 3 more and get to a 20 win season. Could be the start of a lot of 20+ win seasons.

Bad feeling Martin will get exposed on defense this game against Odom.

I feel Martin gets sucked into the middle for no reason far too often. Drive to his side and he will leave his man wide open to help on defense. Doesn't work very often because it's a known thing at this point.

He has to learn when to help and when to stay on his man. Against Odom, I say he doesn't leave his shadow all game.

i think the only thing that keeps us out at this point is three straight ugly losses.
