I seem to recall that the whole LSU team was on the cover of the basketball preview issue when Shaq was a freshman and Chris was a second year player. They hyped it as the best team ever and it should have been but it was just too many stars on one team and they never had chemistry.

Some of the players were Shaq, Chris Jackson, Mo Williamson, Wayne Sims, Harold Boudreaux, Stanley Roberts and Vernel Singleton.

Hard to believe that the 1980-1981 team never made it to the cover. As far as LSU's squads go, they were certainly the ultimate mix of chemistry and talent.

LSU's best team ever no question. Not the most talented, but the best.

Only Rudy played an appreciable amount of time in the NBA and much of that was as a reserve.

Watching Ricardo Gathers ball out for Baylor today really pisses me off. Guy is a baller. Going toe to toe with Nerlins Noel.

Yeah they're a top 20 team but nothing special. No way they win the league. It's all UF.

You think O'Bryant's coming back next year?

I have no question it will help him. I doubt he projects any higher than the second round right now in most mock drafts. But he played with all those big time studs in all of those high school all-star games and fancies himself in their class. He wanted to go pro last year.

I'd be shocked if both JOB and Hickey aren't back.

So which time was he lying? Not that it really matters, but I never believed it was that cut and dried. Lester wanted to come home after his basketball days, I know that.

But there were several other violations and sanctions aside from the cash that LSU self reported and implemented, and the NCAA pretty much just rubber-stamped that and tacked on a word or two. Something Dale never mentions in his NCAA Gestapo rants but I'm sure he seethed about behind the scenes.

I'm really too young too remember the Dale Brown era (born in 88) but sounds like a circus he was the ringleader of. A bit of a joke if you ask me. LSU probably deserved the harsh sanctions because Brown acted like a jackass.

elite eight that year, great run, stolen by Bobby Knight punching the scorers table with no penalty

Was addressing the DB cover on SI in the context of the time and the fact that it was well before the LE incident.

Never said DB was a chior boy, but I don't think he was a dirty coach either.

If by joke you mean a packed assembly center year in year out, knocking off top teams on a regular basis, having cbs and abc setting up plenty of made for tv matchups, putting over 60,000 in the superdome, beating kentucky more times than anybody else in the sec and always being a threat to make a deep run in the ncaa tournament then yeah it was a joke.

Not to hijack but this thread seems to have some knowledgeable posters. I know it's early, but is this LSU team capable of finishing say, top 3 or 4 in the league and legitimately making a run at an NCAA tourney bid?

I only caught the last few minutes of the Setin Hall game on tv, and that was my first look at this team, but I was very pleasantly surprised by their athleticism.
