However it is no secret at all that every single woodwind that is in the band could out march and play any given brass player

Not true. The worst woodwinds are not better than the best brass.

However, the worst woodwinds are probably better than the worst brass.

why would some of the sax players not pick up a brass inst.

Let me think of a good analogy to describe this...
That would be like Jarrett Lee trying to throw a football with his left arm.

It is a completely different concept and you would have to re learn all the basics.

Maybe that will cut down on the pick sixes he had.

This needs to be taken to the Fark Board... Jarrett Lee with a mellophone.

In the last four season only 1 tuba player has actually been cut from preseason camp. There were at least 3 or 4 people in the last few years who had never played tuba before the preseason week started. That always makes the woodwind players mad

If LSU has the best band and so many people want to be in the band why is this...

Because there are 325 spots. about 20 for colorguard, 16 for GG's, 1 from Drum Major, 18'ish from Drumline. Which means even though they get 200+ brass players, they get 200+ woodwinds as well. So they take all the brass they can get, then let in woodwinds according to how many spots are left. I think this year there like... 66 trumpets, so they cut 1 to make it a round 65.

French Horn players (mellophone for Tiger Band) are always in demand.

2002-2006 there were so many mellophones that we switched some over to trumpet and cut others each year.

Tiger Band just limits the number of woodies on the field. That is all.

Yea, I would not want to be marching around in close quarters with people with woodies...

Not the case when I was there. Mellophone 81-86 and we had to recruit a couple of clarinets one year to get our quota. It was like being in one of the Alpha sororities (which are no longer at LSU.)

I hope that doesn't mean he wants to tap a nice piece of brass.

Wow! I could make jokes but I won't at my own expense of being a former TB Mello.
Tiger Band was probably very festive those years.
