I got a full ride from 1984-1988 as an out of state student. I majored in Criminal Justice. It was my understanding that shortly thereafter, they changed their policy that you had to be a music major to get the full ride.
I considered myself to have been very fortunate to have had that great opportunity which forever changed my life.

You can no longer get a full ride from the BAND if you are a music major. You have to get a scholarship from the school of music. They are two different things.

any idea how many on music scholarship are in the band??
Posted on 3/28/09 at 6:57 pm to Tiger Roux
Music or Band? I would imagine probably around 60 on Band scholarship, and im not sure about the music majors. Tiger band is only 18% Music majors.
That sounds really confusing...
While the School of music is in charge of staffing the band program, the Tiger Band, and the school of Music are two separate entities. A Band Scholarship is not the same as a "Music" (Music major) scholarship. If you are a music major you can not not receive a "Band" Scholarship.

Yes. Insomuch as they have separate auditions and are immune for being cut during band camp.

everyone who trys out makes drumline?? I talked to a guy in dallas and his son was in some bigtime band and he said that he has been to several competitions where there are members from lSU band and that they are very good..

No. Percussion just has to show up earlier in the summer and they have their tryouts before everyone else. That way, during the camp in the fall with the rest of the band, the drumline is already set for the year and able to lead the band through songs.

I was in the band my freshman year in '92 and got 2 $320 "stipend" checks for the fall. There is a pretty extensive audition for the band...300 or so for the marching band...50 or so for bengal brass and 120 or so for concert band(when i was there) and i made all 3, but I quit after football season...took too much time with work...only music majors got a full scholly back then!

Another piece of information you might find interesting. If you receive the full ride band scholarship "Golden Oaks" and you try out for the band in the fall but do not make it, you still get to keep the scholarship. The only requirement is that the next semester you also try out for a concert group. As long as you try out (even if you never make it) they will continue to pay for all of your school.
You don't get the $1000 stipend though if you don't make it. The reason there are 325 spots in the band is because there are only 325 stipends that are paid out by athletics.
And as far as I know, LSU is the only school in the SEC that gives out full rides to non-music major band students. Possibly the country. Thats why the band is so good, they are able to pull from Texas and Florida easily and Dr. Moorhouse is a phenomenal director.
To put things in perspective, the university of Texas will offer you $500 your junior year to be in the band.
$12,000 (x4 years) LSU >>>>>>>> $500 (x2) UT
Descriptions of Scholarships

it doesn't matter who they let in as a woodwind. woodwinds suck as marching instruments and all they do is walk in circles in the back of the band.
Posted on 3/28/09 at 8:27 pm to jmitc22
a sax can be loud, why don't they work in a band??
Posted on 3/28/09 at 8:29 pm to Tiger Roux
Mostly because the sound doesn't carry as well as a brass instrument. However it is no secret at all that every single woodwind that is in the band could out march and play any given brass player. The competition is so tough for the woodwinds to get in that you only get the cream of the crop, while there are many trumpet players who belong in a grammar school music class.
Posted on 3/28/09 at 8:31 pm to TigerBandMan
why would some of the sax players not pick up a brass inst.

But I play sax so that makes it ten times more difficult to make Tiger Band, so I didn't make it last semester
French Horn players (mellophone for Tiger Band) are always in demand. I encourage kids to think about playing horn because it does offer more opportunities to receive a scholarship and it's just a beautiful instrument that is overlooked by kids.
