. Is what "almost" happen really that important? Or is what actually happened more important? Bama ALMOST beat LSU! ALMOST!!!
For as log as I can remember, Margin of Victory has played a role in the human polls. And yes, Bama's ALMOST victory is what is getting them publicity for a possible rematch in the title game.

Everything that has already been mentioned. Non-conference is a wash. A&M finishes 7-5 with a higher computer rank than 9-3 Penn State. Arkansas was the only team of the 3 SEC west teams to play both big divisional games on the road. Bama played both at home. Arkansas had the hardest East schedule. Arkansas would be the hottest team in the country.

doesn't matter! Bama has been DOMINATING and Arkansas ALMOST lost a couple games.

Good point, I was just being sarcastic though.

FWIW If LSU were to lose to Arky most likely Bama would be ranked #1 by the human opinion polls... making LSU the team to win @ a #1

lsumatt do you still think an 11-1 bama finishes well ahead of an 11-1 arkansas in the computers?

this is an excellent point, BTW....not only would LSU have faced the tougher schedule on paper as a whole, LSU would have the best "marquee" win of the three teams.

So LSU gets the benefit of beating the #1 team only because Arkansas would beat #1 LSU on the road in the final game of the regular season and knock them from that #1 spot? And that's somehow suppose to be an advantage for LSU over Arkansas?

Well ahead? No. Ahead, almost certainly. Bama and Arkansas should be big, big fans of Oklahoma in the Bedlam game. If OSU wins that game, they will cement themselves as the #2 team in the computers, and likely wedge LSU into the #2 spot in the BCS, even with a loss.
I said this in the BCS discussion atop this board - LSU could conceivably be #3 with a loss to Arkansas, but they would almost certainly be #2 after OSU beats OU. The explanation is on page 23 of the BCS thread.

BTW, I've always stated LSU should finish in the top 2, and I wouldn't even be upset with LSU staying at #1. My argument is that Arkansas would deserve to be in the top 2, and the most logical way for that to happen is for Bama to drop to 3.

While I don't this should be the deciding determining fact, I certainly don't think the above is irrelevant as some would say. If you have 3 tied teams, you have to break the tie somehow, so what's wrong with looking at overall performance throughout the season?

Well, I've said this before and will say it again....
LSU has never even had the opportunity to knock off the #1 team, seeing as how LSU has always been the #1 team this season.

that's what would have happened yes

yes and no, obviously no in the sense it would be better to have won the game and remain perfect
but yes in the sense that it would still leave LSU with the most prestigious win on their resume (which I think is what you were driving at for Arky in claiming arky would have that by beating LSU)

Bama to drop to 3.
Whether right or wrong, I just can't see this happening.
Should it? Maybe, maybe not....but I just don't see how it could happen given the current circumstances.
This whole discussion proves why the computers will be the determining factor in the BCS poll....Voters, just like us, will have different thought processes...and the human votes will be spread out all over the place between Arky.LSU.Bama.....giving the computer the final say in the matter. In the human polls, all three teams will receive some 1st place votes, some 2nd place votes, and some 3rd place votes. The human totals will all be close, thus the computers will determine 1-2-3

quote:Now you are saying something closer to what is statistically factual in all of this. However, for Bama to drop to #3 (in the SEC West order of things), Bama needs to lose to Auburn (and, of course, Arky needs to beat LSU).
BTW, I've always stated LSU should finish in the top 2, and I wouldn't even be upset with LSU staying at #1. My argument is that Arkansas would deserve to be in the top 2, and the most logical way for that to happen is for Bama to drop to 3.
(footnote: I am ONLY talking about the computer ranking. Human polls are completely different discussion.)

I think we've all made good arguments, although of course I think mine is the best. I realize Arkansas has to accomplish something huge before this discussion even becomes relevant (win @ LSU), and I will try to quit talking about these "what if" scenarios until and if Arkansas beats LSU.
Good luck to the Tigers; if Arkansas can't win the SEC or BCSNC, I will be pulling for yall.

A very overlooked game for the SEC west race is the OU/OSU game. OSU winning and holding down the second spot in all the computers might give lsu the cushion they need to stay in the championship game with a loss against Arkansas. An OU win and arkansas win, and I think Arkansas moves up to second in most of the computers and probably secures a spot.
