Sounds like revisionist history. Was "the talk wrong" because it was always "wrong"? Or is it because the HC hasn't done a good job with this particular team and the easy way to absolve the HC is just to say "Oh. The players weren't very good." This isn't on the HC"

The 18-19 team had high preseason expectations not because Wade said great things in press conference or fans were just delusional. It was because LSU was returning their starting PG and SG while adding the 4th ranked recruiting class. I think it it is clear to say that group lived up to their billing.

The preseason expectations going into this year were not simply because of baseless and unfounded hyperbole from the HC (unlike in football). It was based upon the fact they were returning 3 starters from a solid team and once again adding the #4 ranked recruiting class.

Just like in 18-19 there was reason to have elevated expectations for THIS group. But now all of a sudden the thinking "Meh. They really weren't that good. We were wrong to think that"
