The following is a list of teams not on his Top 40.

SEC: Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi
BIG 12: Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Kansas
BIG 10: Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State
PAC 10: USC, Oregon, California
ACC: Virginia Tech
OTHERS: Notre Dame, Boise State, BYU, Utah

Most of these will probably be ranked ahead of us on his poll. This is just an observation.

I'm sure I forgot a few.

If you follow Phil's "logic", which is heavily based on his dozen or so computer models, then this ranking makes some sense.

As he says, he has the LSU facing the top two teams in the East and the other top two teams in the West--three of them on the road, only one at home.

Given this, he says it's the schedule that gets LSU, not a lack of talent. Makes sense, if you're as invested in his models as he is (and, as any Phil Steele fan knows, he really, really is invested in those models).

At the risk of spoiling it for those who haven't bought his magazine yet, he has Rutgers ranked at #16...and he flat out says it's solely because of the schedule.

In fact, he says LSU vs Rutgers would be at least +14 for LSU...it's all about how the schedule breaks.

He has Georgia finishing 13th. They lost their QB and RB. He has lost all credibility.

Decent ranking considering how brutal our schedule is, combined with the tons of question marks on the team. I see nothing unreasonable about this ranking.

I'm sure Bama is in the top 5 with an unproven QB.

well we have an unproved qb and unprovedn defense... 17 sounds about right.

Just FWIW, this is a prediction of his on where the teams will finish the year, not necessarily who he thinks the best teams are.

Link: LINK

If you follow this link you will see that he has LSU picked at #8 pre-season. This is what he is known for his pre-season forcast. On page 25, highlight the page number and put 25 in the space.

It IS shocking that Phil has LSU as having the 21st hardest schedule, but Phil (2007-2008) and all the non-SEC experts usually are shocking when it comes to valuing SEC schedules. Still, I am looking forward to buying his magazine again because he tries hard and he is better than the other national sources. Does anyone know of a better (other than Dandy Don) source or an equal source? I would sure like to read it.
