If there's one thing I've always been critical of with Mainieri, it's that he doesn't know when to bunt. He'll avoid bunting with a bad hitter at the plate, when you think it's an obvious move, but then waste an out with one of his best hitters at the plate. it would have been different if he were bunting him to third.
