The debate seems very clear cut to me. We are 2 decibels louder than Autzen. Suck it Oregon!

Yes this is exactly what the guy I was talking to was saying. Thank you for that response.

You would have to be able to switch back and forth from TS to JH within seconds of each other multiple times before you could start to pick up on any differences with your ear.

And does the same apply for 3 dB?

I am dead serious. Geeky I know but it makes $$$$ and I get to play with sound systems all day long. Its an audiophiles dream job.

FWIW this is probably the most intelligent thread that has ever existed on the rant...

That's kind of what I want to know also. It is amazing though that Autzen does that with what mid 60s attendance? The acoustics in that stadium must be almost a perfect stadium with the built into the ground etc. I also would be curious to know what enclosing the end zones would do to the decibel level. It is really awesome to think that I witnessed the loudest registered outdoor sporting event in atleast American history.

If you are talking about UF, you did.

It may not have been noticeably louder than the Autzen game (apparently that is still up in the air), but the noise definitely had twice as much energy. If that wasn't another earthquake game, there was never one in the first place.

129.8 dB....that is 10 dB higher than jet engines, and .2 dB from the threshold of pain.

It does NOT get louder than that.

No problem. Its what I do.

Technically every 3dB you get double the volume. But like I said the problem is the time apart to compare the two. In the audio world the term is A-Bing. You take two tracks A and B and play them back and forth over and over again till you can figure out the differences. So yeah if you did this you would notice a difference of 3dB. However since this is impossible to do anyone who says they notice a huge difference between JH and TS is full of it. No one is going to remember a difference of 3dB 12 months later.

Yeah I was there for the Florida game and I just got chills thinking of that noise. Man I wish it was a bigger night game this weekend so the same thing would happen . I LOVE LSU FOOTBALL. It gets me hyped up, where even studying physics for a MCAT can be interesting.

Also, it has been a nice change to have an intelligent conversation on the Rant. Instead of the countless exaggerations and completely ignorant comments.

But conversely, how sad is it that what should be probably one of the defining momments in TS history, didn't occur to the team doing something positive, but because USC was upset.

Absolutely. Reflection is HUGE in sound. Imagine if Tiger Stadium was a dome. Last year would have made everyone deaf.

I know. It is crazy to think that with all of the big plays of the game, that instance was the loudest. This is about the time you could que the local ranter explaining that ESPN solely made up this occurrence to make USC think that LSU is envious of them. But in all seriousness, I can't say I didn't lose my voice at that moment so touche.

Yeah in retrospect it would have been cooler for a play but I gotta admit I was screaming too. It was such a great feeling knowing that if we could get out that game alive that we would be undisputed #1.

Is the make everyone deaf reference a literal statement or an exaggeration? If so that is absolutely unbelievable. Also, since you seem quite knowledgeable on the topic, do engineers compute the maximum noise that could be produced in a dome to make sure that the noise cannot become detrimental to the fans? I would assume so, but just verifying.

Actually not sad at all because that stadium was freaking insane all night long, particularly in the 2nd half. Your posts are almost always negative in nature, regardless of the subject. You seem to enjoy sucking the fun right out of whatever topic you post in. Do us all a favor and give it a rest, Debbie Downer.

I was kind of exaggerating but I will say this. If we fit death valley into a dome and everyone screamed like they did when USC was upset....people would be reaching for their ears really fast. That would be a bowl of 97,000 people with a lid on it.

Good question. They do to a certain extent. It isn't done in a way to necessarily simulate crowd noise, but models will be made and studied based on the sound system of the dome. This way they know what their limits are and how to get enough sound to the crowd without hurting people's ears and maintaining quality.
