You clearly have no idea what the medical redhshirt protocol is, but even if you did you only need that if you are going to be at school for 6 YEARS. You think we're trotting Loston out there in 2014?

If he didn't get thru the Clearinghouse, he wouldn't be on the team, he wouldn't have a scholarship, and redshirting would be irrelevant. If he does have an injury, he could play early and if things didn't work out, he could then get a medical redshirt if he got the surgery. However, I don't see any advantage by concealing it. You have 5 years to play 4, so it doesn't get you an extra year, but if he gets the medical redshirt this year and he is unfortunate to be badly injured in the future, it may set him up for a possible extra hardship year.
This.

exactly
it's not like this kid needs anything more than a standard redshirt
chances are he has a greater liklihood of only being around 3 yrs. than being around 5-6, especially considering his skill level and his academic state ..I could see him being 3 and done

I don't think LSU is recruiting too many players that are projects they need to develop over 5 years. That is the only reason to redshirt a player. They are getting the top players in the Southeast. And how many of these players do you think don't want to come in and get playing time as a freshman? Allowing freshman to get PT is a great recruiting tool.

And there are definitely others. And how many do we actually have leave early because they are "sooo good"? Toefield, Clayton, JaMarcus, Mauck, Jean-Francois . . . Booty?

The whole concept of "3 year players" based on the notion that a highly touted high school prospect is "expected" to be leaving early for the pros is nonsense. Guys leaving early for the NFL is far, FAR more rare than guys coming in super hyped and super talented. Using that concern as a major factor in personnel decisions would be extremely foolish and unrealistic, imo.

14.2.3 Criteria for Determining Season of Competition.
quote:
14.2.3.1 Minimum Amount of Competition. Any competition, regardless of time, during a season in an intercollegiate sport shall be counted as a season of competition in that sport, except as provided in Bylaws 14.2.3.1.1, 14.2.3.1.2 and 14.2.3.1.3. This provision is applicable to intercollegiate athletics competition conducted by a two-year or four-year collegiate institution at the varsity or subvarsity level. (Revised: 1/11/94, 4/28/05 effective 8/1/05, 5/9/06)
14.2.3.1.1 Two-Year College Scrimmages. A two-year college prospective student-athlete may compete in a scrimmage as a member of a two-year college team without counting such competition as a season of competition, provided the competition meets all of the following conditions: (Adopted: 1/11/94, Revised: 5/9/06)
(a) The scrimmage is approved by the two-year college;
(b) No official score is kept;
(c) No admission is charged;
(d) No official time is kept;
(e) The scrimmage is played prior to the two-year college’s first regularly scheduled outside competition; and
(f ) The prospective student-athlete participates in not more than two such scrimmages or dates of competition per academic year.
14.2.3.1.2 Women’s Volleyball, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Field Hockey, Men’s Water Polo. A student-athlete may engage in outside competition during the segment of the playing season that does not conclude with the NCAA championship without using a season of competition, provided the student-athlete was academically eligible during the segment that concludes with the NCAA championship. (Adopted: 11/1/01, Revised: 8/8/02, 10/31/02, 5/9/06)
14.2.3.1.3 Preseason Exhibitions/Preseason Practice Scrimmages During Initial Year. During
a student-athlete’s initial year of enrollment at the certifying institution, he or she may compete in preseason exhibition contests and preseason practice scrimmages (as permitted in the particular sport per Bylaw 17) without counting such competition as a season of competition. (Revised: 5/9/06)
If you play, the only way to "redshirt" is if you are granted a medical redshirt. As I said, I acknowledge many freshmen seem to be awarded these due to some mysterious injury, but it cannot be done without additional documentation and it is not a normal redshirt.

ah ok.
I gotcha now.
I was thinking medical redshirt.
like how miles was going to medically redshirt jordan jefferson last season after his "injury" playing miss st.

redshirt and medical redshirt.
I know the difference, I just didn't pay attention to his post where I said "wrong"

Per DD's recap of the Les Miles show,
"Dustin wanted to know when the earliest LSU fans could expect to see Craig Loston on the playing field. Miles said that Loston has great talent and would likely play against Washington with less than two weeks of practice."
