Bill was HC for my last two years of school. To correct and clarify some things.

It wasn't just Arnsparger who recommended Archer, it was a team effort.

Spurrier wanted the job but had nowhere near the coaching capital we see in hindsight. That's why he would coach 3 more years at Duke before going to UF.

He was all about championships and changed the paradigm of success. Before, success was beating our hated rivals (OM and Tulane) and getting a good bowl. With Bill, it was about championships. That's why I don't think he gave a rip about bowl games.

In '86, we won our first SEC in sixteen long years..

And perhaps most importantly, he never lost to Bama.

Yep, never let the ad of a rival sec team pick your head coach.

UF wasn’t really a huge rival until Spurrier came along and brought them to relevance.

Well, BKs wins will total 30 at the end of year 3 - so not horrible. This is far from a complete team. Personnel wise, BK is still a little behind the 8 ball. Most of the portal players, currently on the team, have not been game changers. The injured list is a little longer than normal. JD was the superstar last year. I don't see a superstar on the 2024 team. The D is still bad and we don't have a running game. A fast as hell running QB would help the running game. It certainly needs to get fixed.

Arnsparger really did not like being a head coach and being a pro guy, was not thrilled about the recruiting aspect of the college game. He had some good assistants that were pretty good recruiters....they stayed on after he left and sort of shite the bed on recruiting after.

Also the recruiting landscape really started to change in the mid 80s. Much more aggressive than before. Before 1985 -86 it was sort of rare for a major in state talent to leave the area....maybe go to Ole Miss like Fourcade or Dupard to SMU. But LSU would get guys like Risher, James, Hilliard and Eric Martin and defensive studs like Caston, Barbay, Brooks out of Ruston.

But it was Tom Osborne at Nebraska who started raiding Louisiana for talent when he signed Neil Smith out of McDonough 35 in NOLA about 83/84?....and no one really stopped him. A few years later you had all manner of Big 10, Big 8 along with FSU and Miami coming in and just raiding the place for talent.

Mainly because of Arnsparger and his dislike for recruiting and followed up by Archer and his inability to recruit. Remember it would be be Arnsparger's 85/86 recruits who began the big slide beginning in 89

That's on Archer, not Arnsparger. Arnsparger's last class matriculated in '89. Whether he liked recruiting or not, Bill recruited well.

The exodus of LA athletes coincided with the demise of LSU under Archer and Hallman, not Arnsparger.

Arnsbarger was really the first LSU coach to start using a national vision for recruiting. he was bringing in talent from all over the country. I believe he would have built a program that would have competed with Bama every year. i would put him at a close #2 all time but Cholly Mac did more with less better than anyone in the country when he was coaching. Just couldn't beat Bama. But his defenses were legendary,

You're talking about the 87 to 2000 years and you are right. But beginning in 84 and 85 Nebraska was making regular visits to McDonough 35 in particular as well as St.Aug, then Michigan got in on the act and grabbed Leroy Hoard out of St Aug in the 85/86 recruiting class.....Arnsparger never had a chance with him. Then Mickey Joseph and Vance Joseph.

Not saying Bill did not recruit well, but a lot of LSU's 85 and 86 success was due to Stovall. Stovall iirc recruited Wickersham, Hilliard,James. I know he was the first to ID Wendell Davis in HS. Also Eric Martin. Arnparger did a lot better in attracting defensive talent, but guys like like Barbay were Stovall as was Shawn Burks and Henry Thomas were Stovall
