CLM did not initiate the contact with the hawgs. Their AD, a long time friend of CLM, did. And then CLM's agent did what any good agent will do. He got his client more money. Sorta what Saban's agent does every yr. I don't hold this against CLM at all.

Do not know, but wonder why the non-compete employment clause is not used in these contracts to a certain degree. I realize you cannot or would not block the coach from moving to another team, but it would make since to block them contractually from going to SECW divisional opponent. Especially, since they have inside info on the program and recruiting knowledge that can be used against you after they depart. Yes, agents will try their best to negotiate it out, but if you have a great job and hiring power, then you can demand it. However, if you are desperate for talent with lesser hiring power, then you may have to waive the non-compete to get the hire. I would try for it nonetheless.
