Just a quick question. It seems that we get a lot of little knee tweaks and strains on the line which is understandable based off of their role. Would making the guys in the trenches wear knee braces help prevent some of these minor injuries from happening? I know they dont stop injuries from 370lbs guys falling or rolling through your knee, but maybe help prevent strains and tweaks. I notice that almost all the inemen on teams like Georgia, Ohio state, and even Bama wear the knee braces and we only have a few that do. Is there a reason behind that?

Most NFL teams do it too. I don't know why we don't especially with the numbers that we have.

It's a precaution. Helps keep the knee from bending sideways, which causes most of the severe injuries.

The biggest problem that offensive lineman have is not the man in front of them that they are engaged with. It's someone on the side that may fall into their knee from the side. That's the main reason why they wear them.

Yea thats right. Rolling or someone falling wont prevent most major injuries from occurring. So if they can prevent minor injuries and why the hell dont we make our guys wear them? That's like saying "I know this seatbelts reduces my chances of being injured in a wreck, but the hell with it I'd rather not wear it"...I just had a hard time comprehending that and wasn't sure if there was a reason why they didnt wear them.

As someone who made a livelihood for 12 years selling knee (and other) braces, they may provide minimal support but I doubt they'd actually prevent injuries in the context of football.

I am willing to bet with all of the data available today there is no hard evidence that the braces reduce injury.

I may be completely wrong but if it was documented they reduced injury I bet we would use them.

Bill Belichick Explains Knee-brace Policy

"I can remember on multiple occasions, seeing the brace, like, literally bent in half. Not maybe in half, but bent significantly so that it's taken a blow. The brace bends and the player had a minor injury or a low MCL sprain or something like that. And the braces were strong. Had they not taken that blow and protected the player, you'd have to imagine the injuries would be a lot worse".

It would be a good preventive measure. Our linemen wore knee braces a few years ago.

You’re correct. One of those little details that should be mandated by the staff, but isn’t.

Had this exact discussion with a group of friends Sunday via text as I was watching the replay. Was linked to a fairly exhaustive study where researchers tried to find a significant link between knee injuries and brace use or non use.

The results of the study were absolutely inconclusive. I’ll try to scroll back through the text and find the link and add it here.

Ok so my only point in this whole conversation is “if” by slight % chance they can help keep you(player) from a much worse injury by wearing one and don’t limit mobility what the hell is the excuse for not wearing one??
