“Whether we win or lose Saturday night really doesn't define this football team, especially since it's not a conference game.”
This was Coach Sumlin's comments made on the SEC Network about the opening game of the upcoming college football season. I don't know about his approach motivating his players but I never remember the word “lose” coming from the lips of Les Miles about an upcoming contest….Not even when it was his first game as the Tiger head coach who happened to be against the Aggies' opponents this Saturday ....a game the Tigers won...a game LSU traveled to Arizona and played in Sun Devil Stadium as the “Home” team because the state of Louisiana had been ravaged by hurricane Katrina…..
Not even then did the word “lose” come out of his mouth. I might be wrong….But I've never heard it. So, from the mouth of a true purple and gold homer: Geaux Tigers….Geaux Coach Miles

I can see how it doesn't define them, because it's early in the season... But he shouldn't flat out say that imo

Possibly his last season....

He responded to a question asking him to compare this opener to the game at South Carolina to start last season. He was talking about being tough throughout the season and the lessons learned from blowing out Carolina but finishing 6th in the West.

That being said I think it's more than just first game we are talking about. Whatever happens in this game is not going to define us, win or lose. Just not. Didn't learn that from last year you didn't learn anything. Particularly in a non-conference game. Preparation this game is based on how we have done things in the past. We've been pretty good in first games. So how we approach won't change. Change for us will come down line and how we do things rest of the year

Not a whole world of difference from " we're gonna play so&so because it's gives us our best 'chance' to win". Ones just more evasive than the other

Makes more sense when you look at it in it's entire context. Nearly every pundit in America had Kenny "Trill" as a Heisman contender and A&M to challenge for SEC championship after the Carolina opener. Obviously that didn't work out too well for Sumlin's team

That's because he doesn't say lose. He says "finish second"

Ags would owe him $20M after this season. They aren't doing that.

And it's a pretty childish thing to say. We get it, he hates to lose. So do the other 120-something head coaches in FBS.

Yes,correct but he's comparing his 2015 team with an aggie team who has brought in John Chavis and sold their fan base as the answer to their problems...the missing ingredient to elevating them to nat'l championship status....Sumlin is not stupid....he knows he's hung a heck of a whole lot on the Chief bailing him out of LSU owning him and bringing a few wins to aggieland in lieu of their dismal defense. Chavis will help....just about anyone worth their salt would help that defense...but he's no recruiter and never will be....LSU bro't him elite players...so did Tennessee....Sumlin will not be able to match the recruitment of elite defensive players....that chavis is used to having....and sooner rather than later, this delusional aggie fan base will come to see this...jmho

Sounds like a loser mindset. No wonder he couldn't win shite with one of the best college QB's of my lifetime

Well to be fair didn't miles go lobbying to the Cotton Bowl to take LSU if they lost the SEC title game against UGA in 2005? Why not prepare to win and spend time on that instead of taking time in that week to follow Bertman around?

I hope the Aggies get curb stomped. Screw pulling for the conference when it comes to them. I cannot stand that fan base.
