KC Cheifs field used to be painted like Tiger Stadium's field back in the day.

They did not paint the entire field. Thats the way the grass lays down when cut with a reel mower

This revelation was made for me in a Maxim magazine back in 2000. They had instructions on how to cut patterns into your grass to make it look like professional sports fields.
...and a special mower was the critical piece. More so than basic geometry/math knowledge.
