Maybe but at least Hilliard had an elite pitch. Hall did not.
You know who else missed in Hall? Every other SEC team. Ole Miss and Mississippi State love to get overlooked LA kids and they even missed on him.

Tell us how you recruited pitchers, what were (are) your criteria?

Should go by the sound of the bat or mitt. That’s how Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams do it and they totally knew that guy was going to be a bust.

I just love when people ask these questions as if our coaches have the ability to see the future? If we didn’t recruit him then he wasn’t a highly rated prospect or he was and we found an equally talented guy for a better scholarship deal.
That’s why you see talented Louisiana kids leave the state because we have to balance scholarships with talent. Sometimes we can’t offer an instate kid what we could an OOS kid with equal talent at the time. It’s not always easy to project talent.
Many of these kids are very good from 14-18 but peak in HS. Obviously what we want and look for are kids that are really good or great from 14-18 and either peak in college or keep projecting as a pro prospect. Obviously you prefer the pros but the peaking college kid can be just as valuable for you while at LSU. There are countless examples of that, as are peaking HS kids and kids that progress into the pros.
Some coaches are better at projecting talent and JJ is a proven guy who did that at Arizona which is why I really liked the hire. It’s a little different recruiting southern talent but he’s very aware of that. We have the right guy here. What he did with this team is quite remarkable. We have almost zero reliable pitching but in position to host a super regional and make the CWS. He’s made the most of this roster and every batter I see come up, except for one or two, I feel could either hit it in the gap or hit a HR when he steps up.
My confidence is typically high when we have base runners on. That wasn’t the case with our previous staff. I did have confidence in our pitchers and defense with the previous staff but JJ will address that issue. No doubt in my mind.

Every coach is a stargazer. Nick Saban didn’t build the best dynasty in the history of the sport with 2 and 3 star recruits.
The issue CPM and Cain had in recruiting is they didn’t recruit a balanced roster. They recruited for the weaknesses of the current team then they would make that a strength and the weaknesses would be what they were great at the year before. They didn’t look into the future weaknesses in recruiting.

I just don’t think it was working without the LSU HC out there recruiting these kids from when they are 14 year olds until they were college ready. You need that in todays recruiting. We have a coach now that’s been doing that for years and likes doing it. Now he can do it with a gold LSU jersey on! That gets kids and parents attention immediately. Once he cements his place here, had success doing it and gets recognition across the country, then things will really turn up and I think that’s what he envisioned when he came to LSU.

I think he was 8-4 his senior year, not exactly dominate.

So why did he recruit Hilliard then?
Hilliard can rotate the frick out of the ball.

Bingo. Someone with the understanding of how baseball recruiting works today for some coaches. Including ole Paul. Vitello says hello as does his starting lowly ranked left fielder who runs a 6.1 60 while hitting over 300.

The same reason Jets was our last signee, same reason Cush was signed after others were processed only then did he get signed, Players mature, grow, focus and slide under the radar. I know I’m using football comparisons but look at Harris from La , signed with Bama , off or def?? Forced into action because injuries and just got drafted as a LB. Shite happens

Grades are rarely if ever an issue with baseball.
