In the article linked below they mention that Josh is medically ready to practice. Would practicing now during bowl prep affect his request for a 6th year? I know if he actually played in the game it would eliminate that possibility.

As a freshman in 2007, a variety of injuries conspired to force him to redshirt.
This is a big factor in being granted a 6th year. The NCAA has recently granted a 6th year to Case Keenum and Kentrell Lockett under these circumstances.

I really hope we get Josh for next year.

I would love to know what the "variety of injuries" were and how well they are documented. Not that I don't want the kid back and helping next year, and I know pretty much everybody fudges the medical redshirt/eligibility extension requirements. But given that 90% of all linemen redshirt, and that he came in that year weighing about 270 lbs, I doubt it was injuries that "forced" him to redshirt.

At the end of his redshirt freshman year his knee was scoped and cleaned up due to swelling and soreness. It is documented as is all medical records, this years injury is a no brainier for missing the whole season. He does have a legit case for a six year appeal, but because its the NCAA, you never know for sure...

quote:Obviously the injury could be related, but needing a scope at the end of his redshirt freshman year does not necessarily mean that same injury forced him to miss his true freshman year. JMO this is taking advantage of the system a bit, given that he 99.9% would have redshirted anyway, given what we had returning on the OL that year. Of course as often as the NCAA system screws individuals, it's nice to get one over on them every now and again.

From the Scott Rabalais article:

Or he can bide his time, betting on his health and a favorable ruling from the NCAA to give him a rare but frequently granted sixth season of eligibility next fall.

I'd really like to see him redshirt and comeback strong for another BCS championship run!

rarely requested but frequently granted when requested?

Practicing now, four months after the injury and surgery, would not effect his application for the sixth year; Only stepping foot on the field turf of the Superdome as a player during the game on Jan. 9th would prevent his eligibility at this point.

I was wondering the same thing. I believe if he is joins the team for practice, it will hurt his "chance" for a medical hardship. How I understand it is that if the NCAA determines the injury as incapacitating, it will increase his chances of receiving a hardship. I guess attending practice diminishes that?
