There were 1200 voters the year OJ won it. There will be about 929 this year.

Points are calculated by the total points, but that is different from the number of votes for each rank. The AP poll works the same way. The first week that LSU was ranked no. 1 in the AP poll this fall, LSU did not receive the largest number of first place votes, but had the highest number of total points. Points are awarded for each rank as voted by each voter and totaled. The final rank is determined by the number of points, not by the number of votes at each rank.
