Damn sure isn't in my classroom. Or in those liberal PC textbooks either for matter.
I'm glad you, personally, invest in Jefferson, but your "state mandated" curriculum doesn't share your enthusiasm. Kids, for the large part, aren't going to care about who you personally feel is worthy of discussion versus who the state wants you to teach. And the GLE's, at any history level, say nothing -- to my knowledge -- about students learning anything specific about Thomas Jefferson in an autobiographical sense and that is to protect kids from learning about what they are discouraged from knowing (and I totally disagree with that approach). I think Robert E. Lee is a great American and the ultimate sacrificer (being that the gave up his support for the U.S. in favor of his own state, VA). I can put his posters up and begin the first five minutes of each class discussing why he should be noteworthy for all. You doing that for Jefferson is commendable, but you are expected to teach what is expected from you whether it's LEAP 8th grade or ACT and pACT for sophs and juniors.
The literature often suggests who should be important in schools versus who shouldn't be. Public school kids read Fredrick Douglass, ML King, and maybe Solomon Northup. The only whites that are strongly focused on in history/English dual context would be Benjamin Franklin (simply because his autobiography is proverbial and clean, for the most part...not to mention abridged) and some of the older poets that have little to do with founding of America. When it comes to readings, there's nothing on Jefferson or Washington. Yes, there's discussion of them in relation to the constitution and Washington's success as a military commander, but nothing compared to what a name like Douglass gets.
And those liberal pc texts are garbage, of course. They're watered down and tell history from largely a victorious standpoint and a very western biased one, too. I am not surprised that many, many kids -- even 3.0 college kids -- do not know what Thomas Jefferson looks like. A majority of American history teachers are subpar to begin with. Many others follow the comprehensive curriculum and are not about to turn a lesson about the consitution/Articles of Confederation and turn it into a picture memory game devoted to the third president. You can think my statements about the ACLU having a hand in secondary ed as ridiculous and incredilous, but NO historian who mistreated blacks is going to be vigorously studied. If your high school is different, then it's different.
Point being, JJ is not going to likely know a lot of what YOU feel is essential when it comes to learning. You as a history teacher should know how ill-important the state feels about history compared to math, langauge arts, and science.
ETA* - What parish/area do you teach in LA? Do you even teach in LA? Your pro-Jefferson agenda might actually be persuaded in some places versus others, though not likely.

When told, "The guy's last name is Jefferson"?

Who gives a frick if he can't identify one of the founding fathers by picture image. Such a pathetic thing to whine about. It's almost cultish if you ask me.

JJ27, I still think that we'd have those who would fail. As far as matching a name with a face, I would expect many kids to not know. If given the same question that JJ got, more would get it...still, the first name would probably still be lost at sea. Last names are easier to remember alone than the whole names, I would bet. Sad? Yes. I guarantee that there is a large percentage of college students who cannot name the last three vice-presidents, let alone the current one. So, nothing surprises me when it comes to American history and pop culture. Schools set the bar low for History. It's really no wonder.

People wonder why he puts everything on everyone else. Why wouldn't he when all of his supporters do the exact same?

What were black Americans, or slaves, doing in the late 1700's? It surely wasn't voting. Thomas Jefferson is a founding father, sure, but that's white history.
I don't see how people make such a big deal of nothing. If you are looking for a brilliant qb, support vandy.
ETA: nevermind, I don't think Larry smith is all that bright.

I want everybody to stop and think about what BigEdLSU is saying. And then when you realize it, take a look at Louisiana test scores at the end of the school year compared to the other states.
Thanks BigEdLSU for being a living, breathing, example of why Louisiana education sucks. And I don't think you're alone in thinking that about history either. That is, at least in the south. I know that blacks all around the country don't think that way because I've experienced otherwise.

I'm actually a product of the EBR magnet schools and have represented this state nationally in different subjects when I was in school. Get the facts together first.

Case in point. Where you went to school has nothing to do with it. So you went to Baton Rouge High and Mckinley Middle Magnet. You represented the state and still think the way you do, but supposedly represented the way we think, which is not true. That's why people from other parts of the country think we're all dumb as could be.

Let's flip this around. Because you are white, and your ancestors were, you assume your history is the only right one. What about the millions who were forced into slavery whose decendants are now citizens of this country? Their history is that of Africa, then slave-merchants.
Typically those who won wars write history.
And before you call me anti-American or some other BS, FYI I was on the front lines in Iraq in 03-04. I fought so that idiots like yourself can stay fat and lazy.

My family came to America from Sicily, Ireland, and Nova Scotia. What part of Africa did your family come from?

it cracks me up knowing all these guys defending JJ would rip Cam Newton or Julio Jones if they missed this question

If my education sucked, yours was worse.
This was a JJ bashing thread. Cmon guys, bash more.
ETA: I thought it was funny as hell that he missed it. It was a mistake. But the majority of the posters on this site decided it was another good reason to bash JJ.
