Having to play LSU certainly hasn't helped their cause either.

Theyre only meaningless if LSU isn't highly-ranked.

At any rate, Burrow is a G

if Miami was preseason no. 1, and we beat them, but they finished the season 0-12, would we really be saying we beat a no. 1 team?

Of course this is absurd, but I'm using it to show the absurdity of touting wins over ranked teams at the time we played them, which matters far less than where they end up.

But it swings both ways - if we get a win over an unranked team early in the season, but that opponent goes on to be ranked at year-end, we should get more credit for that.

Same goes for a loss. If we loss early to an unranked team, but that team goes undefeated, then that's not a horrible loss, basing it on the opponent's ranking at year-end, not when we played them.

I'm just asking for a little common sense here, which is surely what the playoff committee uses.

That's true. But for Auburn, having to play Mississippi State and Tennessee didn't help their case for being a top 25 team and Miami having to play Virginia didn't help their case for being a top 25 team.

As others have said, over and over again, preseason polls are only good for the fans to have discussions and debates. Neither Miami or Auburn had any business being ranked in the top ten to start the season.

And so far, it looks like Auburn had no business being ranked in the top 25. Miami should have probably been placed around 15 to 20 to start the season.

LSU on the other hand, should have been in the top 20 to start the season. Perhaps even as high as 15.

Didn't Jamarcus do it in 2006?

correct, and I've said this many times.

Preseason polls only exist for discussion. I hate all polls, but especially preseason and early season polls.

That's why the playoff selection committee waits to put out its first rankings until 3/4 through the season.

I think that's a slippery slope. How good a team is can really change as the course of the season goes on as can a team's confidence. The number in front of your name isn't everything but as you start to lose more I think that fire starts to wane. Not to mention think about freshman. They could be clueless the first couple of games but be on All-American lists by the end of the year. Plus vets can always regress. Look at Stidham at Auburn. Dude was a top 1st round pick in the offseason and he's having a terrible year.

People trying to use the transitive property in football will drive themselves crazy is all I'm trying to say.

Maybe we beat a top 5 in September that gets bit by the injury bug and goes 8-4. We shouldn't get penalized for what happens later.

Click the link in the OP and bitch to the author. It is not going to change though. Every article that talks about LSU's resume for this season says the same thing as the linked tweet. You may hate it, but you might as well get used to it.

Yeah. I know I've seen quite a few posters get on here and say that very thing. It's nice to be ranked high before the season starts and it makes the teams fans feel all warm and fuzzy, but the preseason polls and weekly polls early in the season really seem useless.
