Jay Ward's transition from cornerback to safety this offseason appeared to be a seamless one, which speaks volumes of a third-year defensive back who had never played the position before.

"I played cornerback all my life until spring," Ward said as LSU kicked off fall camp in Baton Rouge. "That was my first time ever playing safety."

Why make the move?

At the time, LSU had lost starting safeties Jacoby Stevens to the NFL Draft and Maurice Hampton to the NCAA Transfer Portal. With spring ball quickly approaching, the Tigers only had a few scholarship safeties still on roster in Todd Harris, Cameron Lewis and Jordan Toles. Harris was set to get first-team reps in camp, but defensive coordinator Daronte Jones was in search of more help at the position.

Stingley, Ricks and Flott are expected to be the team's starting cornerbacks and nickel, while Ward is expected to start at safety. Who starts at the other safety spot, and what the rotation will look like this fall, is yet to be determined thanks to a wave of new safeties in the room, which includes names like Georgia transfer Major Burns and former five-star signee Sage Ryan.

"With Major and Sage, they definitely added more depth that we could use," Ward said. "Both will end up playing this year. They are playing tremendous right now."

I think that’s his natural position. He looked very comfortable there during the spring.

I think we will see a rotation of Ward, Burns, and Harris to start but will see a lot of Sage early in the season. If he picks the defense up well after the first 3 weeks, then Harris will likely drop to forth.

On another note, with all the positive reports of Nudie taking a step forward, why wouldn't sting play outside in base but then inside in Nickle with Nudie and Ricks on the outside? Flott can play dime.

Ward really came on strong last season and showed his ballhawking ability. Safety does seem like a good place for him and will give him the chance to make plays.

Nudie is the nickname for Dwight McGlothern. Not only is typing Nudie easier than McGlothern, but it also makes me chuckle. HAHA

Really excited to see what McGlothern can do. He was one of my favorite recruits in his class and was a top 20, five star early on.

Not sure what happened his senior year, but his ranking tanked and thought LSU had passed on him completely only to pop up out of nowhere late on.

Kid seems hungry to play and prove others wrong. Hope he does just that.

Don’t care if it’s a walk-in as long as it’s better than last year

My only concern about Ward is his size. 6'1 176 is extremely light for a safety in the SEC. (assuming roster is updated).

I think it had something to do with him playing both ways his senior year was the only reason. He wasn't focused on just one position.

Eddie Jackson was an all American safety at Bama and was like 185

He also got a nice contract from the bears last year

Will Pig actually play meaningful snaps? I have no idea what he actually brings to the table. I know last year Darren Evans was talked about how he was top 5 in D1 pass break ups and he's really not a contributor.

Nudie's ranking fell because he played at 3 different HS and he was vocal about being highly rated and wanting to be recruited more by top schools. Some viewed that as "Character concerns."

As well as at his last stop, his Senior year, he primarily player WR. In his senior year he had over 60 receptions for over 1300 yards and 18 TDs. He periodically played DB and had 4 INT but it wasn't his primary role.
