TM7 did things on the field that I’ve never seen done before and he did them often.
I’ve been watching LSU football for almost 40 years.
No one else comes close.

As a safety, I think Delpit is better already.

Casanova immediately came to mind.

Tyrann Mathieu. We may never see another DB play that way at LSU. He's an all-timer. It's a crime that LSU fans and college football fans everywhere were robbed of seeing his 3rd season at LSU (not saying cutting him was the wrong decision, he needed help and bad decisions have consequences, it just sucks)

Jamaal Adams was a great player for LSU without question.
But he’s not in the top 10 greatest defenders in the timeframe you are referencing.
LaRon Landry was better just at safety.
This is not meant to be a knock on Adams, but a testament to how many great defensive players have come through LSU.

Dude had the ability to completely flip the script of a game almost at will.
We will never see another like him.

As far as talent and ability. Patrick Peterson is the best to ever come through LSU. Tyrann is a play maker an was always around the ball but PP7 shut down his side of the field as a freshman. Tyrann was susceptible on the corner but made up for it with turnovers. There’s a reason everyone wants to wear #7

Love PP, and I agree that he is probably the most purely talented guy athletically that has come through, but no, he didn't.
Both AJ Green and Julio Jones, also freshmen, not to mention Harvin, Mike Wallace, McKinley all had plenty of success against him in 08. He won battles too, but saying he “shut down his side of the field” is overselling it.
It’s one of the reasons everyone assuming Stingley will step onto the field and dominate from Day 1 may be setting themselves up for disappointment.
Granted, this defense will be light years better than Malleveto’s disastrous unit was, but we will definitely need Vincent and Joseph to show improvement and be counted on to help out opposite Fulton.

I don’t know that Jamal is the best safety in the last 10 years.
However, Mathieu is one of the most dynamic players in LSU history, and was a heisman finalist as a defensive player as a sophomore. All this within just 2 seasons. His leadership was key during one of the most successful regular seasons in college football history.
Players like Mathieu are in very rare company.

If LSU beats Bama in the 2012 BCS championship, TM7 would be considered among the best college football players ever.
