Look, I'm not the biggest Miles fan in the world but his record speaks for itself. He's a top 10 NCAA coach and nobody can question that. Do I think he's the best? No. But if LSU let him walk we'd be royally fricked at this point. Knowing months beforehand if he's planning to retire/leave gives LSU plenty of time to look at a suitable replacement. This is about the time where it's starting to get too late. Most teams that are looking for hires right now knew ahead of time they were going to be doing it.
