It is? Since when?

I keep hearing people say this, especially commentators during bowl games or "experts" justifying their pick for the BCSNCG. I wouldn't think it would be any harder beating a team twice than beating a team once.

You know what's really hard? Beating a team that you've already lost to this season.

Yeah I never get that either. A team's chances of winning the second game aren't really conditional on the outcome of the first game.

Not so sure about that one.

AL may be in the driver's seat in this game.

The pressure is on LSU not AL. We have everything to lose while AL has it all to gain.

According to Alabama, they have already beaten LSU once, the scoreboard just didn't show it.

The theory is that the losing team will change its strategy and the winner won't make adjustments. Both teams will adjust. Les is real good at adjustments generally.

The outcome of the first does not effect the outcome of the second (statistically speaking), but the odds of winning two in a row (at the onset of the first meeting) are not good.

Take flipping a quarter twice. If you flip heads the first time, it doesnt reduce your chances of flipping heads again, but the chances of flipping heads twice is less than 50%. Thus the saying, it's hard to beat a team twice.

If you want to pick apart a stupid saying, try "control their destiny". If it's destiny, it can't be controlled, that's why it's called destiny.

There has to be an acception to that rule though, right?

If the odds of either team winning each game were 50/50, then the probability that any team winning both is the same as neither team winning both.

If the odds of either team winning each is 50/50, the probability of a specific team having a winning streak of 2 games is only 25%.

But yeah, since outcomes are independent, earlier results don't (other than the mental factor) change the odds of later games.

It's hard because teams don't often play each other twice in one season in College Football

Sabans reputation is on the line.

Don't believe me? Watch what happens if lsu wins.

There is pressure on both teams.

Correct, which is less than 50%, so it is called unlikely, therefore hard.
