Is Tony Benford about to become the next Steve Fisher?

Many may not remember, but in 1989, just a week or two before the NCAAT, Michigan HC, Bill Frieder, announced he would be leaving Michigan at the end of the season to become the HC at Arizona St. He had agreed with ASU, however, to coach Michigan through the NCAAT.

Bo Schembecler, Michigan's AD, said "frick that" and told Frieder to carry his arse to Tempe immediately. That was Bo's famous "Michigan Man" speech. Fisher, one of the assistants, became the interim HC for the tournament. He then led #3 seed Michigan all the way to the National Championship.

Do we see Benford do the same in one last blaze of glory before LSU hari-kari's it's basketball program?

I don't see it. Fischer didn't have any head coaching experience before he took over at Michigan, and he found his place in the driver seat to be quite comfortable after that.

Benford has been there and drove North Texas into the ground.

But shite, I'll take the title if we can swing it.

The Michigan situation has crossed my mind a few times throughout this ordeal, and it's exciting to think about repeating history like that.

Although Michigan eventually got nuked by the NCAA anyway, at least they got to keep that banner.

True, but he was handed a team that went .500 in his first year. They got progressively worse each year, ended up at 8-22 when he got the can. I don't know if that speaks to the inability to recruit or what, but it ain't good.

Hope so,but I doubt it. The NCAA will tell referees to take us out. They will let us get through the first weekend. If we do not have Smart and cannot tune up our three point shooting a bit. It will not matter. Sweet 16 will be as high as we go

This team lives on the edge too much. Has all season.

I think the ceiling is the Sweet Sixteen, but I wouldn't be surprised by a round of 32 exit.

Ah, I misunderstood. In that case, let's hope so. I'd love to stick it to the higher ups.
