Is the bend don't break defense the best to run?

How exactly does this work? You give up the short stuff, rush as few as possible, keep everything in front of you and as the field gets shorter, it compresses the offense and likewise the defense?
It is at times frustrating to watch, but amazingly effective when you have the athletes.
Nickel and dime is underrated. I see why he likes to play a little soft at times instead of press although chavis will man up and go after the qb.
I also notice that when we do blitz, about 50% of the time it ends in bad results.

But, I would like so more input on why it's so effective from people more knowledgable ( long list there).

Number 3 in total defense before the game and held the number 1 offense in sec out of the endzone and only 1 trip to redzone for Alabama.Iwould not call that bend but dont break.Iwould call that shutting them down.

LSU's defense is an attacking defense. The bend-dont-break mentality is not something you'd do if you had tons of great athletes. If you have great athletes you attack and try to force big plays, if you have decent - but not great - athletes then you run a bend but don't break mentality. All bend don't break means is that you keep everything infront of you and wait for the offense to make a mistake. LSU's defense only really played this type of game versus West Virginia this year.
Thats probably why the other poster did the wall head bang.
LSU's defense is notorious for its aggressive nature - but it isn't attack or "benddontbreak" 100% of the time. They change constantly.

"Bend, don't break" is usually used to describe zone defenses that keep the ball in front of them and try to eliminate the big play. That's not what LSU does at all. Most of the time we are an attacking, blitzing, man-to-man defense. So I don't know why people keep talking about this.

Sure hope we don't use this same defense against AR....they could pull off a win if that's the case.

they can't run the ball against us. they got less than a yard per carry against bama. we play nickle and their quality receiving core is going to have problems getting open in the time frame we give Tyler Wilson to throw.

The point of a bend but don't break defense is to force the offense to execute perfectly on every play during the drive. Give them short yardage, make them earn everything if they mess one thing up the drive is done.
But we don't run that this year. We constantly attack, we go for the ball, we have entirely too much depth to resort to bend but dont break.

Chavis goes into a more conservative bend but don't break style when we have a lead. It is why we give up yards but not big plays in the 2nd half of games.

I like to think that we are set up to be a turnover generating defense.
We don't allow any players to get deep on us. Sure this will give up a few unnecessary yards underneath, but it also requires offenses to run more plays.
The more plays you can force the opposing offense to run on a drive, the more opportunities our collection of ballhawks have to force a fumble or pick one off.
Throw in the ability to rush the passer and get sacks and TFLs and it makes for a nasty nasty defense.
