re: Is Miles a good recruiter, or does LSU recruit itself?

For all his faults, Hallman could recruit. He signed the Top 4 running backs in the south in one year. He was just like Orgeron. Too stupid to do anything with him when he got them.
After Mac, LSU sort of lost it's way in LA until Dinardo signed Faulk and then Saban got back in to New Orleans.

Actually, you can criticize him some on recruiting. While his classes are highly ranked and bring in some great athletes, his lack of thorough recruiting in several positions has left our depth and quality in uncomfortable states. Namely, the recruiting of DL and LBer have been pretty inconsistent under him. Last year, we were playing a walk-on at DT.
Really, I'd say LBer and DT have been his weaknesses overall. Still the man can recruit and has done a great job bringing in athletes.

I'm not saying Miles isn't a good recruiter b/c he I believe he is, BUT I also believe that he is in an optimal situation at LSU and I think that there are MANY coaches that could come into this situation and recruit just as well (and be good gameday coaches on top of having top recruits). Just my opinion.

We can criticize him on many things, but recruiting isn't one of them. He's been a great recruiter everywhere he's been.
This. Do you haters ever pay attention to the interviews with recruits and their parents? They love the guy. He is a family man and very sincere, two qualities that shorty is sadly lacking.

quote:That's all fine and good being a family man and such, but that's not why we're paying him. Saban gets players and he's NOT a family man, so don't tell me that's the reason we get our players. They'd still come even if we had an a-hole for a coach if LSU was an elite program and could get them to the pros.

Put the bottle down and go get a life; now you're just inventing stuff. This is a stupid post.

but a lot of saban's players at lsu were louisianan home grown.. and were coming to LSU regardless
clayton was headed to florida st.
spears was headed to miami.

i bet miles never had a top 10 recruiting class til he came to LSU.

his only head coaching job prior to lsu was oklahoma state. i think miles is a excellent recruiter.

As far as I know, Saban realized the hotbed that he had in New Orleans as far as talent and began to utilize it. The best recruiter by far might have been Marquise Hill and he might have had the most memorable quote. "People are going to start respecting LSU...and if they don't, we're gonna smack them in the mouth." -Marquis Hill R.I.P.

If I can decipher your English, what you said is ridiculous. Surely you aren't going to try and say RP was not an SEC caliber QB?

This was the biggest thing Saban did for LSU. He made it a trend for instate talent to go to LSU. Florida St, Miami, Texas, Florida, etc... kept taking Louisiana's best talent in the 90s.
Miles has been able to keep that trend going, no he doesn't get every single top LA recruit, but he gets almost all of them.

how many games did RP start for LSU and where did RP play his last 2 seasons?
part of being a legit SEC QB is being on the team.

Don't downplay the part that DiNardo had in the talent turnaround. He was the one that began to stem the flow of Louisiana talent out of state. Saban and Miles have built on his foundation.
DiNardo wasn't a great coach by any means, but in all honesty he does deserve some credit for the talent remaining home.

A little of both. If only Les was a better coach. I don't think talent is the problem.

he was the RC for Colorado and brought in a lot of the talent that won a NC in 1990.
Don't know if it was top 10 but a National Championship is considered better by most people...

i think its both, i also think he's a great person too judging by how much his players really like and respect him. they seem to really have his back even in the tough (ole miss) times.

LSU does not recruit itself to have top 5 / 10 classes each year. Les' strong suit is recruiting and one of the best in country -- hiring good recruiters on his staff is part of his job as head of the program (that's for those of you who have never been in management). There are a number of schools that have equal to or superior brands to LSU that don't recruit as well -- Michigan, tOSU, the U, GA, TN........ Some of you underestimate the allure of many programs and need to, at least, give Les props in this area. USC, TX, and FL have the best built in success for recruiting.
